Another meningitis scare emerges, targeting NYC's gay men - WAFB ...

By Alan Mozes
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Oct. 11 (HealthDay News) -- As a nationwide outbreak of steroid-linked meningitis grabs headlines, health officials in New York City say a separate, unrelated outbreak is hitting gay and bisexual men.

The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) say 12 new cases of bacterial meningitis have arisen among gay and bisexual men since August of 2010, with the biggest spike in cases coming over the past five weeks. One of those infected has died, while another patient remains in critical care. Eight of the 12 cases occurred among men infected with HIV.

As a result, last week the DOHMH issued an advisory recommending that all HIV-positive male residents who've recently engaged in casual "intimate contact" with other men get vaccinated against the disease immediately.

The new recommendations specifically address all HIV-infected men "who have had intimate contact with another man met through a website, digital application ('app'), or at a bar or party since Sept. 1, 2012."

City officials note that people who are HIV-positive generally face a greater risk for acquiring invasive meningococcal disease, a potentially deadly illness that is estimated to take the life of approximately one in five infected patients.

They stressed that while everyone is potentially at risk for meningitis infection, the risk is much lower among non-HIV-positive individuals, so the general population "does not require vaccination" due to this outbreak.

Officials also stressed that the outbreak among New York City's gay males is entirely separate from the national fungus-linked meningitis outbreak linked to tainted steroid injections that has infected 137 people and killed 12 across 10 different states this past month.

That outbreak is linked to tainted medicine while the NYC outbreak is tied to person-to-person transmission, the health department said.

Bacterial meningitis is not an airborne disease, and cannot be spread through inhalation. However, it can be transmitted via prolonged intimacy, such as kissing and sex, and/or through the sharing of objects, such as eating and drinking utensils or cigarettes.

A number of vaccines are effective (although not foolproof) at offering protection against the illness within a week to 10 days following inoculation. And for the next couple of months, the city is making vaccines available through a number of citywide health facilities, where normal insurance co-pay requirements will be waived.

City officials cautioned, however, that HIV-positive men should first seek the advice of their health care provider before going in for an inoculation, in order to make sure that the vaccine is appropriate for them.

They further added that the vaccine does not cure or treat the disease, and urge anyone who has already developed telltale symptoms of infection to seek medical attention immediately.

Dr. Amanda Cohn, a medical epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta, said that the outbreak seems so far isolated to New York City.

No similar outbreaks have been reported this year from other cities, and "the number of cases of meningitis caused by this bacteria is at an all-time low in the United States," Cohn said. "There are usually two to three outbreaks or clusters of meningococcal meningitis in the United States in a year, but most of the cases are sporadic and not related to other cases."

"(So) we consider what's happening in NYC of concern," Cohn added, "but not unduly alarming."

According to Cohn, "meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. In some cases this inflammation can cause death, or serious complications such as long-term neurologic problems. Persons who are experiencing sudden onset of symptoms such as high fever, headache and neck stiffness need to be seen by a medical provider urgently."

The DOHMH notes that such symptoms typically manifest two to 10 days following exposure to the bacterium.

Officer fired after posting about Swinney ticket

(AP) ? A South Carolina police officer who issued a speeding ticket to Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney was fired after using company equipment to post an account of it on the Internet.

Pickens Police Chief Rodney Gregory said in a release that officer Michael McClatchy used a department computer on Sept. 14 to detail what he said happened during the stop. Swinney was clocked going 63 mph in a 35 mph zone on Sept. 3 on the way to his radio call-in show. He was cited for speeding and the officer reduced the penalty to a minimum fine and points, according to Gregory.

McClatchy's post said he thought Swinney expected to be excused for the violation.

Gregory said Swinney paid the fine and apologized. No. 10 Clemson plays at No. 4 Florida State on Saturday night.

CERN closes in on primeval plasma

Scientists at CERN have smashed together various particles for the first time, moving closer to learning what was in the super-hot plasma wonderland that formed right after the primeval Big Bang, the European physics research center said on Thursday.

The announcement followed another boost for physicists at CERN near Geneva with the effective endorsement by independent experts in a key journal of their claimed discovery of a new particle, the Higgs Boson.

CERN's ALICE experiment, one of six grouped around its underground Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has been analyzing particles that emerged from the overnight smashing together of tiny hydrogen-derived protons and much larger lead nuclei.

"It was really a pilot run to see if the LHC can produce these asymmetric collision systems. It showed that it can, and it worked like a charm," Johannes Wessels, an ALICE scientist, told Reuters. "We are very excited about the results."

The function of ALICE ? an acronym for A Large Ion Collider Experiment ? is to probe what happens to matter when it is heated to 250,000 times the temperature at the center of the sun ? as in the "quark-gluon plasma" at the birth of the cosmos.

Until now, in the search for the Higgs and the "New Physics" that encompasses concepts like super-symmetry, dark matter, extra dimensions and parallel worlds, CERN has smashed only identical particles together at close to the speed of light.

Another ball game
"Whether we've been smashing hydrogen protons or lead protons together, it's been like hitting oranges with oranges. But now it's like colliding apples and oranges," said another CERN scientist. "It's a different ball game."

Just before the giant LHC, which runs for 27 km (16.8 miles) under farmland and villages along the Swiss-French border, closes down for nearly two years next February, a new and longer series of proton-lead collisions will be conducted.

In the LHC's normal proton-proton collisions, very little of the plasma ? which appeared immediately after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago and was all there was in its first vital milliseconds ? is produced.

Consequently, particles that shoot off from those high-energy collisions provide little or no clue to the full make-up of the bubbling plasma soup of liquid quarks and gluons ? among the tiniest objects in nature.

A shy, brightly colored monkey species has been found living in the lush rain forests at the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a find that utterly surprised the researchers who came upon it.

    3. Battle-scarred skeleton may be King Richard III
    4. Help wanted: Bigfoot researcher

But a fraction of the billions of those explosions produce particle tracks like those that came in the wake of the Big Bang ? after the plasma cooled ? which can be analyzed by other CERN experiments for any hint of the "New Physics" phenomena.

It was from those identical proton collisions that the long-sought Higgs Boson, believed to be the particle that enabled matter to be turned to mass and thus the universe to take form, seemingly emerged, to be announced to the world on July 4.

Whether the new particle is actually the boson named after British researcher Peter Higgs has yet to be formally confirmed, which would make official the most important scientific discovery of the century so far.

But a clear step in that direction came this week when the CERN papers on its findings were published by an important science journal, Physics Letters B, that only runs material that has been reviewed and found sound in peer-review.

Home Improvement Ideas That Will Excite And Inspire You | Urban ...

Wrap your water heater in an insulation kit to improve energy usage and efficiency. Kits are available for any size or model water heater and the savings generated from increased efficiency quickly offsets the cost of the insulating kit. Water heater installation kits are also easy to install, making this a simple do it yourself home improvement project.

A great home improvement tip that will give a great feel to your home is to place wooden panels all throughout your living room. This will give your living room an extra homey feel, and you?ll find yourself wanting to spend even more time in front of your television set.

Make sure that your contractor checks on the building code, whenever you make a major change to your house! Often, people will make sweeping changes to their house just because they feel like it or because they feel it will make their home more grand. If you make a change that causes a safety issue, you could end up in major trouble down the line.

Rather than allowing a spare bedroom to sit empty and unused, why not turn it into your own personal library? Even if you don?t feel that you enough books to warrant a library, you can also fill its shelves with DVDs, CDs and your favorite magazines or paper. Add a plush rug and a high-backed chair for an extra touch of class.

Check out a new contractor through the Better Business Bureau and your Home Owners Association to find out if he?s registered and what his rating is. If he isn?t registered with either, sever ties immediately. If he is registered, see if anyone has lodged a complaint against him and how it was resolved.

Repainting, replacing the carpet, or getting new plants and other decorations are easy ways to update your home. Rearranging furniture and installing mirrors can let the room seem bigger and more airy. Make sure the room provides the functionality that it is meant to serve while expressing your personality and tastes.

Add flowers and candles to your home. These additions are a cheap and easy way to add cheer to a home. The flowers will add color and the candles will brighten up the room and add a pleasant aroma if scented. Candles should be used with care, however, to prevent fires.

If someone in your household has long hair or you bathe shedding pets often, use a hair trap in the shower to prevent annoying clogs in the drain. There are a variety of models to fit different drain styles, but they all work by preventing hair from entering the drain and getting stuck in the trap.

Decals are a great facelift for boring furniture and appliances; getting them off is a different story. If you?re out of ideas on how to remove old decals from surfaces the following tip is sure to help. Spray the decals you wish to remove with WD-40 spray. Try to lift the edges to get the liquid underneath. Let it sit in the solution for a minute or two and then gently scrape the decal with an old credit card or a plastic knife.

To give an ordinary room a sleek and finished look, add some decorative molding. Molding is highly sought after by many buyers, and can make a room look more put together. Molding is surprisingly easy to install, and is fairly inexpensive. To really make your molding pop, paint it a color that compliments your walls.

Consider converting unused rooms in your house. Before you spend too much money adding an extra room or two to your home, seriously look at what you have to work with. Are you getting much use out of that exercise room or office? Even storage spaces like attics can be transformed into something useful, like a bedroom.

As you can see, home improvement can actually be very satisfying. Learning how to do small jobs at your house fosters your sense of independence and boosts your confidence as a property owner. The do-it-yourself movement is absolutely within your reach after careful research, and reading this article is a great first step.

There never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. Well, this year's laptop computers may be the answer to getting back a few of these valuable hours each week. A recent study showed that notebook computer users report an average of 10.8 hours each week of additional productivity over users of desktop computers. Those who travel frequently, reported almost 15 more, productive hours, weekly. Laptops increase productivity because they free the worker from network cables. Time once wasted commuting, waiting at airports or during those "can't sleep" hours at home, can now be a chance to stay in touch with customers, finish projects, check e-mail or share files. This year's lines of laptop computers can deliver most, if not more, of the power and benefits of desktop computer but in a portable package. The computers link effortlessly to wireless networks at the office, home and on the road.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your mobile computing solution. In The Office In the office, mobile computing has powered cooperation by enabling employees to stay connected to the office network while literally moving their laptops from office to conference room and back, all while the laptop remains linked through a wireless network to all the needed files. The new freedom from Ethernet cables gives workers an opportunity to share ideas and test solutions easily without having to re-establish network connections. In some offices, the concept of mobile computing has taken on new meaning as users literally take their laptops into a series of meetings in different locations, without ever missing a keystroke. Always On The GoFor the business traveler, wireless access is critical to staying connected. Many hotels and airports, coffee shops, bookstores and other places provide "hot spots" that let wireless users access the internet and transfer large files quickly via high-bandwidth connections. For those who want even more, flexible access, the latest notebooks offer mobile broadband capabilities that let users connect to the Web using cellular networks from major wireless service providers. Home At home, notebook users have the freedom to tap into the Internet or their office network conveniently, using an inexpensive wireless network that can link through the home's broadband connection. That means workers can access the Internet, their network folders and check e-mail while sipping a cup of coffee on the front porch or while making dinner in the kitchen. These wireless networks also help users share a single printer without manually linking to the printer cable. Advanced notebooks/laptops permit a growing number of electronic components-PCs, cell phones, GPS systems and others-to be synchronized using Bluetooth technology. (See last week's article http://www.plaintechtalk.com/blog for more information on Bluetooth technology, an inexpensive wireless system designed for use at close range.) This permits easy data transfers between devices. Wireless networking is an inexpensive and effective way for small businesses and home offices to maximize productivity.

NHK developing hybrid renewable energy-powered video camera for use in disaster areas

NHK developing hybrid renewable energypowered camera for use in disaster areas

You can always count on Japan's NHK to come up with new, exciting and innovative ways to bring us video coverage. The latest project? A wind- and solar-powered robot camera designed for situations such as natural disasters. Loaded with a 1,200 Ah battery, even if the elements don't bless it with sun and air, it can keep filming for two to three days. The combination of wind turbine and solar panels obviously allow it to generate more power than either method on its own, with the turbine reportedly generating 1 kW at 11 m/s wind speeds. A special power-saving mode prevent it draining too fast when full functionality -- such as the built-in wireless, cellular and satellite broadcasting systems aren't needed. Currently the prototype is installed on a rooftop while battery and power-generation are fully tested, but it's hoped that this could lead to further developments for disaster area broadcast equipment. Or -- here's hoping -- power-cut-proof sports coverage.

LIVE: Republican National Convention 2012

Republicans put off the a lot of their first-day convention activities until Tuesday to let Hurricane Isaac blow through a little bit. But that hasn't stopped a lot of the activity. Here's a live and curated look at what's going on in Tampa.

Make sure to tune in to ABC's live stream of the convention coming to order at 2 p.m. ET and then an hour of live stream at 7 p.m. ET.

How Many Islands? - 11:14 a.m. ET -

There are actually 15 Northern Mariana Islands, but most of the 53,000 population is on Saipan. Northern Mariana Islands Census info is here. Mitt Romney won their 2012 caucuses, which were held March 10th with 848 people taking part. Mitt Romney won with support of more than 80 percent caucusers. They've got 9 delegates at the convention.

Setting the Scene - 11 a.m. ET - For starters and to set the scene, here's a look at where American registered voters view the two candidates heading into the Republican National Convention.

From an ABC News pollster Gary Langer's write-up of the ABC News / Washington Post poll out today, it's a dead heat. So nothing has changed recently.

Key Nuggets:

Obama has 46 percent support, Romney has 47 percent.

50 percent disapprove of Obama's performance. 56 Disapprove of him on the economy. 50 percent trust Romney to handle the economy.

But, as Langer points out, 62 percent of registered voters say Obama favors the middle class. 58 percent say Romney favors the wealthy.

Garage Door Safety Tips | ej-fransen.com

Keeping Your Garage Door Safe
As a homeowner, keeping your garage door safe should be a a priority, especially when you have kids or pets around the house. Even a standard garage door weighs at least a couple of hundred pounds ? more than enough weight to cause serious injury or death if it happens to fall or close on someone. Fortunately, a garage door is one of the less-complex bits of equipment in an average home and can be expected to last for at least 20 years under normal use. However, the moving parts like the springs and rollers are prone to wearing out over time and can pose a potential safety hazard if not maintained regularly. Bear in mind that while some garage door maintenance can be performed by a homeowner, it is not recommended that you attempt any major repairs ? spring replacements in particular can be extremely hazardous for an untrained professional due to the extreme tension contained in the springs.

  • Inspect the garage door every 3 months. Check all moving parts including springs, cables and rollers for any signs of wear such as cracking, fraying or chipping. Verify that any bolts, screws or other attachments are tightened.
  • Once a month, lubricate all moving parts with a product specifically designed for lubricating garage doors (e.g. WD-40 Garage Door Lubricant). This will help reduce the normal wear-and-tear and prolong the life of the parts.
  • Depending on the type of garage door you have, it may either have a single torsion spring mounted above the garage door or an extension spring mounted on each side of the garage door. If you have extension springs, check that they have a safety cable installed ? this is simply a cable that runs through the middle of the spring. This will help catch any pieces of broken spring in the event a spring breaks. The spring may break apart violently, showering the garage with pieces of debris that could potentially injure someone or damage your property.
  • With the garage door completely closed, trigger the emergency release on your garage door opener. This will disconnect the garage door from the opener so you can open it by hand. Make sure that no one is near the door, then open it by hand. The door should remain open no matter what position it is in, but if it will not stay open or even slams shut, the springs are most likely beginning to wear out and will need to be replaced in order to ensure safe operation of the garage door. The springs are designed to balance the weight of the garage door and make it easy to move.
  • For homeowners with sectional garage doors (where the garage door consists of several sections hinged together) ? do not use the joints between each section as a handle to pull the garage door down. Hundreds of finger injuries occur every year due to this ? the garage door joints close up and can severely pinch fingers. Some garage doors are designed with safety joints to prevent this from happening, but always keep your fingers clear of the joints when closing your garage door by hand.

Keeping Your Garage Door Opener Safe
Along with the garage door, the garage door opener is also a potential safety hazard if not maintained properly. Fortunately, a correctly-operating garage door opener will significantly reduce any risk of injury but always use caution around a moving garage door. Some maintenance can be performed by a homeowner but for any significant issues, we always recommend consulting a qualified professional.

  • For safety in homes with small children, it is always recommended that the garage door opener?s wall switch be placed at least 5 feet off the ground.
  • With the garage door open, activate the garage door opener and place your hand on the bottom edge of the garage door as if trying to keep it open. The door should reverse immediately when it detects an obstruction. If it does not ? check the closing force on the garage door opener.
  • With a roll of paper towels placed in the door opening, try closing the garage door. When the garage door touches the paper towels, it should immediately reverse. Check the closing force on the garage door opener.
  • While the garage door is closing, pass an object across the garage door opening. The invisible beam projected by the safety sensors on either side of the garage door should be broken, causing the garage door to immediately reverse. If it does not, the safety sensors may be dirty ? they can be wiped down with a soft clean cloth to remove any dirt.

Justin Krutz blogs about a number of home improvement related topics for GSM Garage Doors, a Chula Vista garage door repair company which offers a variety of services to homeowners.

Do you have a serious phobia?

I was just wondering if anyone else has any serious phobias. By this, I mean fears that stop you doing things - such as a serious fear of heights would prevent you from going on planes etc.

I have a phobia of the dark, elevators and gas masks. I have to sleep with a nightlight and I NEVER go anywhere dark without some form of a light. My fear of elevators means I always take the stairs. I get panicky when I absolutely HAVE to use an elevator in case it gets stuck and I'm trapped in it. My fear of gas masks (yes, weird, I know) originates from the episode of Doctor Who called 'The Empty Child,' in which there were gas mask zombies. It makes me have nightmares to this day (7 years since the episode), and when I see a gas mask, I start to have panic attacks. Proper attacks. I once froze in fear when I saw one and couldn't move.

ANYWAY, enough about me; what's your serious phobia? What does it stop you doing?

Re: Do you have a serious phobia?

Clowns (Supernatural and IT contributed mostly to this fear), if i see one i freeze on the spot or try to run away, i once saw a clown doll kind of thing at blackpool pleasure beach, i was terrified. We had to walk all the way around the park to get to the ride we wanted to go on which was a 30second walk past the clown.
Horses (don't even know why, i'm just terrified of them)
Heights (i can go on a plane if i don't look out the window, just being able to see how high i am makes me fill ill)
  3. Re: Do you have a serious phobia?

Spiders. It has gotten better over the years, but when I was younger I used to be awful. I would stand frozen if I saw one, have panic attacks, and even if one had been killed I wouldnt go in the room for days. (This was a pain if it was in my room, as Id end up sleeping in my parents room and my Dad would go in my room).

Or id just sit, shaking, crying and screaming for ages!! It was kind of crazy at the same time.

Ive kind of had to deal with it more on my own now, but if theyre even slightly big I wont go near them.

One thing i absolutely hate is when people say ''Im terrified of spiders too!'' and then theyre there picking them up, or leaving them in the same room. Thats not being terrified, thats just disliking them.

and it kind of stopped me doing things- like I wont go camping, I didnt go on a college trip to the amazon because of my phobia. I am currently trying to plan a trip to Australia, but im aware of the huge huntsman spiders they have, and although Im trying to face my phobia now, im finding this difficult to accept!

I also have a spider radar- in that wherever I go, i WILL see a spider.

But I also have a habit of attracting them. There has been at least 3 occasions when i have had spiders on me- 2 of them were the massive black hair house ones :'( ergh wanna cry just remembering that.

I remember lying in my bed in the dark and i felt a tickle on my face, so I looked down and there was a spider walking along my chest, I flicked my hand on it and rushed to put the light on and it was standing on the floor and it was massive, I just stood there frozen before reality hit and i got someone to kill it and started crying lol and a second time, i picked up my pajmas and a house spider dropped out running in my bed, and no one was home, so I went to get the hoover, and just stood hitting the hoover on my bed, because i couldnt find the spider. After about an hour, my parents returned home and my Dad could lift up the covers and get him

    And also sharks and space!

Space as in the galaxy or as in an empty space like outside? I'm guessing the galaxy but i don't know how you can be scared of that :/

    Spiders.

I once cried my eyes out upon seeing one in my front room. and wouldn't go in there until my Dad killed it.

A friend also once threw a spider at me knowing I'm massively arachnophobic and I had a mini panic attack, reduced to tears.

The sight of a spider can get my heart seriously racing, and put me in a complete state. There's those skinny ones in the corner of my shed and I'm "ok" with them, but any other
    spider seriously screws me up.

Spiders like crazy. If I woke up and had one on me, I dread to think what would happen.. It'd probably be health hazardous though.

yeh, i wouldnt say its a bad phobia, but if i think of space (outer space) or see it on TV or in films it scares me a fair bit and i start panicking inside!

Space either scares you or leaves you in awe because of how amazing it is :P I for one love it, I wish i was old enough to apply for the Mars One project

This is so true. My Dad is like this, he considers himself arachnophobic but he's the one picking it up when I was sat there shaking and crying..

im not surprised. Sometimes i dont even tell people im scared of spiders in case they dont realise the extent.

At work once they were winding me up telling me there was a pet spider in the stock room and i ended up crying at the cash desk lol

Lol my dad used to prank me too. Whenever he picks up a spider and had it cupped in his hands he used to put it near me and pretend to throw it. the furthest back I can remember of being petrified is when I was about 7, there was a huge spider at my mum's friend's house and the daughter picked it up and put it RIGHT in front of my face, and this spider was MASSIVE. Just thinking about it over 10 years later makes me feel uneasy haha. Scarred me.

    ****ing spiders..

UPDATE: Eco Animal Health profits as Latin sales surge

Pdf 3:57 am by Natasha Barr

---Adds additional comment and broker comment ---

?

Eco Animal Health () upped its dividend by a quarter last year as strong sales of its ?best in class? livestock antibiotic helped profits surge.

The veterinary drug company increased underlying net profits by 32 per cent to ?2.6 million, from ?2 million, in the year to March, while earnings per share rose to 4.19 pence from 2.96 pence.

The improvement was underpinned by sales of lead product Aivlosin in Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela.

The group?s fortunes were further boosted after the year-end by US approval for Aivlosin - a water soluble antibiotic for pigs.

The drug, which works much more quickly than existing older products and so is more profitable for farmers to use, currently accounts for 65 per cent of revenue.

Cenkos analyst Ian Berry said as the US and Canada are approximately a third of the addressable market, the approval represents a ?massive opportunity? for the group. ?

Financially, this boost isn?t likely to start showing on the group?s figures until next year as it will need a little time for the product to build momentum.

Eco expects to start making sales in the last quarter of this financial year.

Berry added: ?Once ECO has gained marketing authorisations and begun to sell product in all its major markets it will represent an attractive takeover target for an international pharmaceutical group that would be able to multiply ECO?s profitability several fold through distribution and marketing synergies.?

Chairman Peter Lawrence said: ?We are confident that the long awaited marketing authorisations in the US and Canada will have a major positive effect on the development of ECO, although it will be some months before the product launches gain momentum.?

?ECO is very well placed to further broaden its product ranges and its global reach will ensure that it capitalises on opportunities as they arise in all the company?s major markets.?

The company ended the year with ?9.5 million in net cash and it now plans to up its dividend by 25 per cent to 3.75p.

Lawrence added: ?We feel that we are confident our future is very bright and we want to share that with our shareholders and reflect it in the dividend.?

Cenkos has a ?buy? rating on the stock.

miR-122: Loss of tiny liver molecule might lead to liver cancer

A new study shows that loss of a small RNA molecule in liver cells might cause liver cancer and that restoring the molecule might slow tumor growth and offer a new way to treat the disease.

The animal study was led by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center ? Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC ? James).

The scientists examined what happens when liver cells lack a molecule called microRNA-122 (miR-122). They found that when the molecule is missing, the liver develops fat deposits, inflammation and tumors that resemble hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer.

When the researchers artificially restored miR-122 to nearly normal levels by delivering the miR-122 gene into liver cells, it dramatically reduced the size and number of tumors, with tumors making up 8 percent on average of liver surface area in treated animals versus 40 percent in control animals.

The study is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

"These findings reveal that miR-122 has a critical tumor-suppressor role in the healthy liver, and they highlight the possible therapeutic value of miR-122 replacement for some patients with liver cancer," says study leader Dr. Kalpana Ghoshal, associate professor of pathology and a member of the OSUCCC ? James Experimental Therapeutics Program.

More than 28,700 new cases of HCC are expected in the United States in 2012, and 20,550 Americans are expected to die of the malignancy. Major risk factors for HCC include hepatitis B and C virus infection and liver damage due to alcohol use. HCC is curable if caught early, but most cases are diagnosed at a late, incurable stage.

MiR-122 is found mainly in liver cells ? it is the most abundant microRNA in those cells ? and it plays a major role in regulating cholesterol in the body. This microRNA is lost in some people with HCC, however, resulting in a poor prognosis.

For this study, Ghoshal and her colleagues developed a strain of mice that lacks miR-122 and develops HCC through the progression of events that begins with fatty liver deposits followed by inflammation and liver cancer.

The researchers then used a second strain of mice that spontaneously develops liver cancer due to overexpression of a cancer-causing gene called MYC (pronounced "mick"). The researchers delivered miR-122 into the animals' livers during tumor development. Three weeks later, those treated with the molecule had smaller and fewer tumors.

"The model we developed for these studies will not only facilitate our understanding of liver biology, but it will also be good for testing therapeutic efficacy of newly developed drugs against liver disease, including HCC," Ghoshal says.

Ghoshal also notes that research by others has shown that hepatitis C virus requires miR-122 for replication. "Because our findings demonstrate what happens when miR-122 is lost in liver cells, they might help improve the safety of new drugs that treat hepatitis C virus infection by blocking miR-122," she says.

Apple, Samsung CEOs once again fail to reach pre-trial agreement on patents

Apple, Samsung CEOs once again fail to reach pre-trial agreement on patents

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung's Vice Chairman Choi Gee-sung and mobile chief Shin Jong-Kyun have once again reportedly failed to come to an agreement on their now long-standing patent dispute during a second round of court-mandated settlement talks. Citing several sources familiar with the talks, Dan Levine and Poornima Gupta, writing for Reuters said:

Apple believes [FRAND] patents should be valued lower due to those dynamics, one of the sources said. Additionally, Samsung believes it has a stronger patent portfolio than Apple when it comes to next-generation technology like 4G, the source said.

FRAND patents are supposed to be licensed under "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminate" terms in exchange for their being adopted as essential standards in a technology. Apple chooses to keep their patents proprietary and not license them, rather than to have them become part of a standard. Some courts and government regulators have taken issue with FRAND patents being used to sue or counter-sue against non-FRAND patents and, in the EU, ant-trust investigations have begun looking into them.

This was at least the second court-mediated settlement talk to fail. While Apple and Samsung continue to sue each other over patents, and whether or not Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad, or Apple violated core Samsung technologies, Apple remains Samsung's largest customer, sourcing numerous components from Samsung's manufacturing division.

If Apple and Samsung can't reach an agreement, the case will go to court and then it'll be out of their hands. Since courts have varied widely in patent decisions of late, from tosses cases out of court to issuing injunctions, what happens next will be hard to predict. Except for the amount of time and money spent by all parties involved.

I'm still calling for Judge Judy to step in and settle everything in 30 min of snark.
