Home Improvement Ideas That Will Excite And Inspire You | Urban ...

Wrap your water heater in an insulation kit to improve energy usage and efficiency. Kits are available for any size or model water heater and the savings generated from increased efficiency quickly offsets the cost of the insulating kit. Water heater installation kits are also easy to install, making this a simple do it yourself home improvement project.

A great home improvement tip that will give a great feel to your home is to place wooden panels all throughout your living room. This will give your living room an extra homey feel, and you?ll find yourself wanting to spend even more time in front of your television set.

Make sure that your contractor checks on the building code, whenever you make a major change to your house! Often, people will make sweeping changes to their house just because they feel like it or because they feel it will make their home more grand. If you make a change that causes a safety issue, you could end up in major trouble down the line.

Rather than allowing a spare bedroom to sit empty and unused, why not turn it into your own personal library? Even if you don?t feel that you enough books to warrant a library, you can also fill its shelves with DVDs, CDs and your favorite magazines or paper. Add a plush rug and a high-backed chair for an extra touch of class.

Check out a new contractor through the Better Business Bureau and your Home Owners Association to find out if he?s registered and what his rating is. If he isn?t registered with either, sever ties immediately. If he is registered, see if anyone has lodged a complaint against him and how it was resolved.

Repainting, replacing the carpet, or getting new plants and other decorations are easy ways to update your home. Rearranging furniture and installing mirrors can let the room seem bigger and more airy. Make sure the room provides the functionality that it is meant to serve while expressing your personality and tastes.

Add flowers and candles to your home. These additions are a cheap and easy way to add cheer to a home. The flowers will add color and the candles will brighten up the room and add a pleasant aroma if scented. Candles should be used with care, however, to prevent fires.

If someone in your household has long hair or you bathe shedding pets often, use a hair trap in the shower to prevent annoying clogs in the drain. There are a variety of models to fit different drain styles, but they all work by preventing hair from entering the drain and getting stuck in the trap.

Decals are a great facelift for boring furniture and appliances; getting them off is a different story. If you?re out of ideas on how to remove old decals from surfaces the following tip is sure to help. Spray the decals you wish to remove with WD-40 spray. Try to lift the edges to get the liquid underneath. Let it sit in the solution for a minute or two and then gently scrape the decal with an old credit card or a plastic knife.

To give an ordinary room a sleek and finished look, add some decorative molding. Molding is highly sought after by many buyers, and can make a room look more put together. Molding is surprisingly easy to install, and is fairly inexpensive. To really make your molding pop, paint it a color that compliments your walls.

Consider converting unused rooms in your house. Before you spend too much money adding an extra room or two to your home, seriously look at what you have to work with. Are you getting much use out of that exercise room or office? Even storage spaces like attics can be transformed into something useful, like a bedroom.

As you can see, home improvement can actually be very satisfying. Learning how to do small jobs at your house fosters your sense of independence and boosts your confidence as a property owner. The do-it-yourself movement is absolutely within your reach after careful research, and reading this article is a great first step.

There never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. Well, this year's laptop computers may be the answer to getting back a few of these valuable hours each week. A recent study showed that notebook computer users report an average of 10.8 hours each week of additional productivity over users of desktop computers. Those who travel frequently, reported almost 15 more, productive hours, weekly. Laptops increase productivity because they free the worker from network cables. Time once wasted commuting, waiting at airports or during those "can't sleep" hours at home, can now be a chance to stay in touch with customers, finish projects, check e-mail or share files. This year's lines of laptop computers can deliver most, if not more, of the power and benefits of desktop computer but in a portable package. The computers link effortlessly to wireless networks at the office, home and on the road.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your mobile computing solution. In The Office In the office, mobile computing has powered cooperation by enabling employees to stay connected to the office network while literally moving their laptops from office to conference room and back, all while the laptop remains linked through a wireless network to all the needed files. The new freedom from Ethernet cables gives workers an opportunity to share ideas and test solutions easily without having to re-establish network connections. In some offices, the concept of mobile computing has taken on new meaning as users literally take their laptops into a series of meetings in different locations, without ever missing a keystroke. Always On The GoFor the business traveler, wireless access is critical to staying connected. Many hotels and airports, coffee shops, bookstores and other places provide "hot spots" that let wireless users access the internet and transfer large files quickly via high-bandwidth connections. For those who want even more, flexible access, the latest notebooks offer mobile broadband capabilities that let users connect to the Web using cellular networks from major wireless service providers. Home At home, notebook users have the freedom to tap into the Internet or their office network conveniently, using an inexpensive wireless network that can link through the home's broadband connection. That means workers can access the Internet, their network folders and check e-mail while sipping a cup of coffee on the front porch or while making dinner in the kitchen. These wireless networks also help users share a single printer without manually linking to the printer cable. Advanced notebooks/laptops permit a growing number of electronic components-PCs, cell phones, GPS systems and others-to be synchronized using Bluetooth technology. (See last week's article http://www.plaintechtalk.com/blog for more information on Bluetooth technology, an inexpensive wireless system designed for use at close range.) This permits easy data transfers between devices. Wireless networking is an inexpensive and effective way for small businesses and home offices to maximize productivity.

NHK developing hybrid renewable energy-powered video camera for use in disaster areas

NHK developing hybrid renewable energypowered camera for use in disaster areas

You can always count on Japan's NHK to come up with new, exciting and innovative ways to bring us video coverage. The latest project? A wind- and solar-powered robot camera designed for situations such as natural disasters. Loaded with a 1,200 Ah battery, even if the elements don't bless it with sun and air, it can keep filming for two to three days. The combination of wind turbine and solar panels obviously allow it to generate more power than either method on its own, with the turbine reportedly generating 1 kW at 11 m/s wind speeds. A special power-saving mode prevent it draining too fast when full functionality -- such as the built-in wireless, cellular and satellite broadcasting systems aren't needed. Currently the prototype is installed on a rooftop while battery and power-generation are fully tested, but it's hoped that this could lead to further developments for disaster area broadcast equipment. Or -- here's hoping -- power-cut-proof sports coverage.

LIVE: Republican National Convention 2012

Republicans put off the a lot of their first-day convention activities until Tuesday to let Hurricane Isaac blow through a little bit. But that hasn't stopped a lot of the activity. Here's a live and curated look at what's going on in Tampa.

Make sure to tune in to ABC's live stream of the convention coming to order at 2 p.m. ET and then an hour of live stream at 7 p.m. ET.

How Many Islands? - 11:14 a.m. ET -

There are actually 15 Northern Mariana Islands, but most of the 53,000 population is on Saipan. Northern Mariana Islands Census info is here. Mitt Romney won their 2012 caucuses, which were held March 10th with 848 people taking part. Mitt Romney won with support of more than 80 percent caucusers. They've got 9 delegates at the convention.

Setting the Scene - 11 a.m. ET - For starters and to set the scene, here's a look at where American registered voters view the two candidates heading into the Republican National Convention.

From an ABC News pollster Gary Langer's write-up of the ABC News / Washington Post poll out today, it's a dead heat. So nothing has changed recently.

Key Nuggets:

Obama has 46 percent support, Romney has 47 percent.

50 percent disapprove of Obama's performance. 56 Disapprove of him on the economy. 50 percent trust Romney to handle the economy.

But, as Langer points out, 62 percent of registered voters say Obama favors the middle class. 58 percent say Romney favors the wealthy.
