US band Bloodhound Gang booted from Russia concert

MOSCOW (AP) ? The American rock group Bloodhound Gang was kicked out of a Russian music festival and pelted with eggs after videos emerged of its bass player shoving a Russian flag down his pants at a recent concert in Ukraine. Russian prosecutors are even considering whether to open a criminal case in the matter, which comes amid a rise in U.S.-Russian tensions.

Videos posted online of Wednesday's concert in the Ukrainian city of Odessa show bass player Jared Hasselhoff pushing the Russian white, blue and red flag down the front of his pants and pulling it out the back. He then shouted to the audience: "Don't tell Putin," a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The incident outraged the Russian government. Maria Minina, a spokeswoman for the weeklong Kubana festival in southern Russia, said Saturday that the band's headlining performance the previous evening had been canceled because of its treatment of the flag.

The American band is known for its sexually explicit songs, including "The Bad Touch," with its unforgettable lyrics: "You and me, baby, ain't nothin' but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel."

Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky tweeted Friday night that he had spoken with officials in the southern Krasnodar region, known as Kuban. "Bloodhound Gang is packing its bags," he said in the Twitter post. "These idiots will not perform in Kuban."

Hasselhoff was questioned Saturday by police, according to the Russian Interior Ministry, which said prosecutors have been asked to decide if the musician could be charged with defaming the Russian flag.

The bass player apologized late Friday at a news conference held at the music festival in the city of Anapa, the local Yuga.ru news portal reported. He was quoted saying that he had meant no offense and explaining that it was a band tradition for everything thrown from the stage first to be passed through his pants. Hasselhoff said he decided to throw the flag because some fans had seemed disturbed to see it hanging on the stage.

The scandal caused by the American band in Russia comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries over National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, who was given temporary asylum in Russia last week to help him evade prosecution in the U.S.

As the Bloodhound Gang members were driving to the Anapa airport on Saturday, activists from a pro-Kremlin youth group threw eggs and tomatoes at their vehicle, Yuga.ru reported.

The band members were taken off their afternoon flight to Moscow after they had already boarded the plane, Russian news agencies reported, citing airline officials. After being questioned by transport police, they took a later flight, the reports said.

Lawmakers want perjury probe for Corzine

By Douwe Miedema

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A group of Republican lawmakers called on Friday for a criminal investigation of Jon Corzine, the head of failed futures broker MF Global, saying he may have committed perjury when speaking before Congress in 2011.

Corzine, a Democrat who previously served as New Jersey's governor and senator, headed MF Global when it collapsed in October 2011 in one of the 10 biggest U.S. bankruptcies.

Customers were left reeling when it was discovered that about $1.6 billion was missing from their accounts. That money turned out to have been used as stop gaps, which is illegal and caused public outrage.

Corzine maintained during several Congressional hearings that he did not know what happened to the money. But recorded conversations unearthed by MF Global's regulator showed otherwise, the members of the House of Representatives said.

"There is no way Mr. Corzine could have been "stunned" to learn of hundreds of millions of dollars of missing client funds," they said in the letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder that was dated August 1.

Corzine used that expression when he appeared before the Senate Agriculture Committee on December 13, 2011, the letter said.

A civil complaint from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in June containing recorded conversations showed that Corzine knew more than he said, the letter added.

A Justice Department spokesman said it would review the letter after receiving it through official channels.

The 18 signatories of the letter, all Republicans, urged Holder to reopen a criminal probe into Corzine's actions, and to investigate whether he committed perjury by misrepresenting what he knew about the missing money.

"Mr. Corzine stands by all of his congressional testimony," said a spokesman for Corzine, who is also a former Goldman Sachs co-chief executive.

Corzine wanted to aggressively build out MF Global into an investment bank, but it collapsed when bets on European government debt went sour and markets lost trust.

He often struck a defiant tone when testifying before lawmakers about the debacle, blaming back-office dealings and denying knowledge of any instructions to misuse customer funds.

But the CFTC's complaint claims Corzine was aware of the company's low cash balance and continued to pay large obligations anyway.

Actor Andy Samberg at the Television Critics Association summer press tour for his new Fox comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

Andy Samberg's family knew he was funny when he was an infant and relieved himself in a bathtub, then laughed hysterically about it.?

"My sister started squealing and laughing and I started laughing hysterically," Samberg said told reporters at the Television Critics Association's press tour Thursday for his first post-"Saturday Night Live" TV show, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," which premieres on Fox on Sept. 17. "And my mom said, 'That?s when we knew.' I like to think I haven?t matured in my comedy at all since then."

Samberg, 34, plays a smug and effective detective in the workplace comedy set in a Brooklyn police precinct. Although his character, Jake Peralta, can be goofy, he's also the best detective in the house.

"He's like McNulty from 'The Wire,' except instead of drinking problems and philandering he's being a jackass," Samberg said. "I think it's important for the show to work, because otherwise why do you care? If he?s actually good at it, you can forgive him from being a jackass."

"He's comedy McNulty!" added executive producer Dan Goor.

Samberg said he wasn't looking to become a series regular on a television show. But when "Parks and Recreation" executive producers Goor and Michael Schur, who created "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" in a similar documentary-style format, approached him, he couldn't resist.

"I was not looking to do a TV series at all," Samberg said. "But I?m a huge fan of 'Parks' and I?ve seen what these guys have done with (Amy Poehler), who is basically my hero and idol ... it was too good to pass up."

The diverse cast includes Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti and Stephanie Beatriz, who plays a detective and is excited to be one of two Latinas on the show.

"It never happens that you look over and there?s another Latina actress on the same show with you and we?re not doing accents," Beatriz said. "Nobody?s doing anything spicy, you know? It?s amazing, it?s incredible and it does reflect this room and the United States."

CONCRETE LEVELING WORKS IN OHIO

The city of Columbus in Ohio located in the United States is a great city with all the facilities that any man could ask for. Among its many facilities, the concrete leveling in Columbus is greatly popular. Unlike other foundation repair companies the companies located in Ohio helps one level their sidewalks, driveways and patios with great discounts upto 75 percent.

Concrete leveling does not tear out or replace the existing concrete surface be it a driveway or a patio but corrects it by altering the foundation that the surface sits on. And this makes it a cheaper alternative for small businesses and private homes.

The concrete leveling in Ohio follow the basic leveling technology of raising the sunken concrete block by pumping it up under hydraulic pressure. Thus correcting and bringing it back to its original position without replacing it.

The following procedure is followed for concrete leveling in Columbus:

A small hole is first drilled through the affected area. Then finely crushed limestone mixed with water is pumped into the holes. This material then fills in the void areas and causes a pressure which helps to raise the concrete slab. If the measurements are precise then the slab raises to its original position.

Although concrete leveling technology has been around for over 50 years most are not aware of its many advantages over replacement. This includes money saving up to 50 percent off, time saving that is it can be completed within hours and it also helps in maintaining the uniform colour of the concrete slabs. Also unlike replacement works concrete leveling in Ohio don?t need municipal building permits.

The concrete leveling in Ohio technology has its many advantages as seen above but it also has some disadvantages. This includes the fact that concrete slabs can only be raised with this technology and that it cannot be lowered. Another disadvantage is that sometimes the limestone can shrink causing a small rise back.

Like 'Thrones,' no one's safe on 'Sleepy Hollow'

Tom Mison is Ichabod Crane in "Sleepy Hollow."

Like a certain horseman's head, don't get too attached to the cast of "Sleepy Hollow."

"No one is safe," warned producers Thursday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

"You're never sure exactly what characters are going to get it," they added, evoking heartbreaking punishers such as "The Walking Dead," "The Following" and "Game of Thrones."

This surprised actor Orlando Jones, who plays Capt. Frank Irving on FOX's new modern-day Ichabod Crane series, which sees the fictional character, who dies in the 1800s, rise again in the present to battle the Headless Horseman.

"We're still reeling from the news that we could die at any point," Jones half-jokingly cracked. ?

Leads Tom Mison (Ichabod Crane) and Nicole Beharie (Det. Abby Mills), however, can probably count on job security ? maybe for seven years!

Noting that "the network has been unbelievably supportive of the show," co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman pointed out FOX refused to pick up "Sleepy Hollow" to series until they knew the long-term game plan.

"They made us do our homework," laughed his show partner Roberto Orci.

That included Bible study.

By following the biblical prophecy of the Great Tribulation, which ultimately "determine(s) whether or not the Apocalypse happens," Kurtzman said, "we will actually get to milk the story over seven years. Abbie and Crane were the two witnesses designated by God to help balance the scales. Each trial they face will be an episode."

Although Crane is intent on rescuing his dead wife from a mysterious netherworld, he will still be very attracted to his mortal partner.

"There will be a 'will they or won't they' (undercurrent to their relationship)," Kurtzman told TODAY.com. "For sure!"

Mison views Ichabod as thinking "he's the only sane person in the room ? everyone around him is a maniac. (Abbie) has a similar secret, (and) they have to bond really quickly ... out of necessity, working together for a common aim even though they are 250 years apart."

Spoiler alert: The Headless Horseman is killed off in the premiere ? but unlike the mortals' deaths, he'll be sticking around. "He does come back into the series from time to time," said executive producer Len Wiseman. "He still is a man ? he isn't just going to be a creature."

The Horseman manages to be quite expressive from the neck down ? "you can do a lot with body movements" ? but we'll also see his head in flashbacks.

In another "Sleepy Hollow" link to the Bible, "Headless" is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. "The other Horsemen are going to be just as cool and daunting as this guy," said Wiseman. "Once he gets his head back he's part of that bigger picture."

"Sleepy Hollow" premieres Monday, Sept. 16 on FOX.

Fla. education chief resigns amid grading scandal

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? Florida's education commissioner resigned Thursday amid allegations that he changed the grade of a charter school run by a major Republican donor during his previous job as Indiana's school chief.

Tony Bennett announced his immediate resignation at a news conference, saying that he while he did nothing wrong he didn't want to be a distraction to Gov. Rick Scott's efforts to overhaul Florida's education system. Emails published by The Associated Press this week show that Bennett and his Indiana staff scrambled last fall to ensure Christel DeHaan's school received an A, despite poor 10th-grade algebra scores that initially earned it a C.

Bennett called that interpretation "malicious and unfounded" and said he would call for Indiana's inspector general to look into the allegations because he is certain he will be cleared of wrongdoing.

He said it would be unfair to Scott "to have to spend my time and the State Board (of Education's) time, as things continue to trickle out, defending myself." He called the allegations "politically motivated."

Bennett lost his re-election bid last November in Indiana. He was hired by Florida as its education commissioner, a nonelected post, in December.

Scott, at an appearance in South Florida, said he had not fired Bennett or demanded his resignation.

"He let me know that he was going to resign. It was his decision," Scott said at a charity event in Delray Beach. "Tony did a good job here. ... We're doing well in education." Scott refused to answer questions about the accusations against Bennett in Indiana. Bennett is the third education commissioner to leave office since Scott became governor in January 2011.

Indiana uses A-F grades to determine which schools get taken over by the state and whether students seeking state-funded vouchers to attend private school need to first spend a year in public school. They also help determine how much state funding schools receive. A low grade also can detract from a neighborhood and drive homebuyers elsewhere.

After Bennett learned about a likely low grade for Christel House, he fired off an email last Sept. 12 to his chief of staff.

"This will be a HUGE problem for us," Bennett wrote. "They need to understand that anything less than an A for Christel House compromises all of our accountability work."

Bennett, who had been reworking Florida's grading system as the state's education commissioner, denied that DeHaan's Christel House Academy school received special treatment. He said earlier this week that discovering that the charter would receive a low grade raised broader concerns with grades for other "combined" schools ? those that included multiple grade levels ? across the state.

The revelations that Bennett and Indiana officials scrambled to change the grade of one school come amid a strong debate over Florida's grading system.

Bennett earlier this month pushed the Florida board that oversees education policy to adopt a "safety net" provision that prevented the grades of more than 500 schools from dropping more than one grade this year.

That provision was adopted by a 4-3 vote amid much debate and criticism that the move would "mask" the true performance of schools. Bennett's plan was even opposed by the education foundation set up by Bush. The grades released last week still showed a sharp drop in the number of A-rated schools and a jump in the number of F-rated ones.

Kurt Vonnegut's work joins Kindle Worlds fan fic program, Kilgore Trouts rejoice

Kindle Worlds has become unstuck in time. Amazon announced this morning that it has wrangled a license for Kurt Vonnegut's work, bringing Cat's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions and the like to the world of paid fan fiction. One rep from the author's trust called the deal a "natural extension of his legacy and a testament to the enduring popularity of his characters and stories." At the very least, it marks a turn toward more classic literature (and, arguably, legitimacy) for a program that thus far includes the likes of Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries. And certainly Vonnegut's vast catalog offers plenty of fodder for the prospective novelist, * and all.

Gulf of Mexico ?dead zone? puts seafood industry at risk

by Chip Reid / CBS News

DULAC, La. -- On the pristine beaches of Mississippi, thousands of dead fish, stingrays, crabs and shrimp have washed ashore this month. They died from a lack of oxygen in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

It's called the "dead zone," and it appears every summer. This year's dead zone, though, is larger than average and more than twice the size of last year's.

"The alarming news is that it continues to be large year after year after year," says marine biologist Nancy Rabalais has measured the dead zone since 1985.

The primary cause of the dead zone is nitrogen-based fertilizers in Midwest fields that are washed down the Mississippi River by spring rains and in to the Gulf. There they create blooms of algae that rob the water of oxygen.

In Dulac, La., David Chauvin worries about what that could do to his shrimp business.

"Shrimp are one of the most fragile creatures on the face of the earth," he says. "You take a shrimp and put them into a bucket with no oxygen whatsoever, they'll die within seconds. ... That could mimic a dead zone."
