(AP) ? Uniforms for U.S. Olympic athletes are American red, white and blue ? but made in China. That has members of Congress fuming.

Republicans and Democrats railed Thursday about the U.S. Olympic Committee's decision to dress the U.S. team in Chinese manufactured berets, blazers and pants while the American textile industry struggles economically with many U.S. workers desperate for jobs.

"I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference on taxes.

"If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says USA on it, painted by hand, then that's what they should wear," he said, referring to an athletic jersey.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters at her weekly news conference that she's proud of the nation's Olympic athletes, but "they should be wearing uniforms that are made in America."

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said simply of the USOC, "You'd think they'd know better."

In a statement, the U.S. Olympic Committee defended the choice of designer Ralph Lauren for the clothing at the London Games, which begin later this month.

"Unlike most Olympic teams around the world, the U.S. Olympic Team is privately funded and we're grateful for the support of our sponsors," USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said in a statement. "We're proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company, and excited to watch America's finest athletes compete at the upcoming Games in London."

Ralph Lauren also is dressing the Olympic and Paralympic teams for the closing ceremony and providing casual clothes to be worn around the Olympic Village. Nike has made many of the competition uniforms for the U.S. and outfits for the medal stand.

On Twitter, Sandusky called the outrage over the made-in-China uniforms nonsense. The designer, Sandusky wrote, "financially supports our team. An American company that supports American athletes."

Ralph Lauren's company declined to comment on the criticism.

In fact, this is not the first time that Ralph Lauren has designed the Olympic uniforms. Yet that did little to quell the anger on Capitol Hill.

"It is not just a label, it's an economic solution," said Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y. "Today there are 600,000 vacant manufacturing jobs in this country and the Olympic committee is outsourcing the manufacturing of uniforms to China? That is not just outrageous, it's just plain dumb. It is self-defeating."

Israel urged the USOC to reverse the decision and ensure U.S. athletes wear uniforms that are made in America.

Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., separately sent letters to Lawrence Probst III, chairman of the USOC, complaining about the made-in-China uniforms. Brown suggested that the USOC find a manufacturer with a facility in the United States, suggesting the Hugo Boss plant in Cleveland.

"There is no compelling reason why all of the uniforms cannot be made here on U.S. soil at the same price, at better quality," Gillibrand wrote along with Israel.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., said that while millions of Americans are unemployed, "there is no reason why U.S. Olympic uniforms are not being manufactured in the U.S. This action on the part of the U.S. Olympic Committee is symbolic of a disastrous trade policy which has cost us millions of decent-paying jobs and must be changed."

In a tweet, U.S. track and field Olympian Nick Symmonds, who will compete in the 800-meter run at the London Games, wrote: "Our Ralph Lauren outfits for the Olympic opening ceremonies were made in China. So, um, thanks China."

This is hardly the first time patriotism has been discussed when it comes to Olympic clothing. The must-have souvenir of the 2002 Salt Lake Games was a fleece beret, something that athletes wore in the opening ceremony and prompted countless people to spend hours on lines waiting to purchase during those Olympics.

Those berets were made by Roots, a Canadian company that was the official U.S. team outfitter for that opening ceremony.

In the last four years, the USOC has faced criticism for some of its sponsorship deals as it has scrambled to deal with the economic downturn.

When General Motors left as a sponsor, the USOC signed a $24 million deal with German automaker BMW that raised eyebrows. At the time, the USOC highlighted the carmaker's 42-year history of selling cars in the United States and the fact that BMW has 7,000 American employees

The USOC and the International Olympic Committee also were criticized for sticking with BP as a sponsor after the deadly oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico.

ABC World News reported Wednesday night that the uniforms were made in China.

Audi's race to dominate luxury market hits speed bump

Audi

Audi's S5 coupe is critical to the automaker's ambitious growth plans.

?

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com contributor

?The smell of smoke is readily apparent, though it takes a second to realize it?s from the nearby wildfires and not from the tires of the new Audi S5 as it goes screeching through a tight, winding Colorado mountain pass.

The German automaker recently gave a handful of American journalists the chance to test its latest products, including the S5 coupe and smaller S4 sedan and the new all-road crossover, vehicles critical to Audi?s ambitious growth plans. But as solidly planted as the two sporty offerings might be, there are some clear bumps in the road ahead for Audi.

In an unexpected announcement, Audi AG CEO Rupert Stadler said this week that the automaker is pushing back by a full five years its goal of becoming the world?s largest premium auto manufacturer. He told the German publication Sueddeutsche Zeitung that is not likely to happen until 2020.

?The road is getting bumpier,? Stadler said, while stressing that the automaker?s goal is to ?seize and secure the top position.?

When Stadler announced his plans a few years back, it came as little surprise to Europeans, who have seen the Volkswagen AG subsidiary steadily gain ground ? recently overtaking rivals like BMW and Mercedes-Benz in a number of key markets.

But it?s a shock to many Americans because the brand has long operated in the shadows of those rivals, as well as being overshadowed by Lexus, Toyota?s high-end marque that was, until last year, the consistent U.S. luxury sales leader.

?In Europe, Audi has been strong for years,? said brand marketing manager Loren Angelo during the recent Colorado product preview. ?But, here in the U.S., it was a very different situation.?

Audi was a fast-rising upstart back in the mid-1980s, breaking out from the staid, upscale mainstream with distinctively styled products like the 5000 sedan.? But the manufacturer got caught up in a safety-related scandal that all but destroyed the brand when the 5000 was alleged to have suffered from unintended acceleration problems similar to those recently plaguing Toyota and Lexus products.

As with Toyota, a federal investigation eventually cleared Audi ? putting most of the blame on driver error ? but the German import lost most of its momentum, and by 1992 sales had tumbled more than 80 percent, leading parent VW to seriously consider pulling Audi out of the American market.?

In the end, the company decided to tough it out, but it would be nearly two decades before Audi regained that lost momentum. Questions of survival were raised again in the middle of the last decade when Audi of America entered what Angelo described as a ?period of stagnation.?

VW nudged things back into gear by giving Audi more autonomy ? it now operates as an almost independent company ? though it continues to share some engineering resources as well as many underlying components with Volkswagen and other VW Group brands.

The strategy paid off. A flood of new products, including the R8 supercar, clicked with consumers, and Audi sales took off? in a way they hadn?t since the early days of the old 5000 sedan. Ironically, it was one of the more resilient luxury brands during the recent recession.

It ended 2011 with record U.S. sales of 117,561 and has since set new records every month. Last year, the brand reached a 10 percent share of the American luxury market. The goal, according to Angelo, is to reach 11 percent for 2012? And for the moment, the U.S. subsidiary is still targeting a near-doubling of sales, to at least 200,000 a year, by 2018.

To get there, Audi recently announced that it will finally move ahead with long-debated plans to open a North American assembly line. The facility, which will open in Mexico by 2016, will help offset the exchange rate penalty Audi now faces importing products produced in the eurozone. The new plant will serve a variety of markets, however, addressing another serious challenge to Audi?s broader global growth plans.

?I wasn?t surprised? to hear CEO Stadler delay Audi?s plan to become No. 1 in the luxury segment, said analyst Dave Sullivan, of AutoPacific, Inc. ?A lot of that has to do with capacity,? he said, ?the biggest thing that?s holding them back.?

Indeed, dealers in the U.S. and a number of other markets routinely complain about the long waits for some of Audi?s more popular products, such as the A5.

But there are other challenges ahead.? In the U.S., Audi still doesn?t have the level of brand awareness that it needs to generate 200,000 annual sales, company officials admit. However, they?re quick to trot out numbers to show that their brand?s ?purchase consideration? ? a factor measuring how many luxury buyers even look at an Audi ? is rapidly on the rise, from just 42 percent in 2006 to 60 percent last year.

Growth in the American market is certainly important ? perhaps even more significant considering the crisis in Europe that is leading to a Continentwide slide in car sales, both luxury and mainstream. Complicating matters is an unexpected slowdown in the Chinese market, which had been the world?s fastest-growing outlets for luxury vehicles until recently.

Not only has the pace of growth slowed to a crawl but luxury makers ? notably including competitor Mercedes ? have had to offer new incentives and even cut prices on many of their products.

Nonetheless, Sullivan and other analysts believe that Audi remains ahead of the luxury segment curve. It has built a clear reputation for design leadership and has a solid following for its Quattro all-wheel-drive technology.

It continues to struggle to improve quality and customer satisfaction, according to recent surveys. But the general trend is upward. And if Audi can simply maintain that momentum, Stadler and other officials contend, it is well-positioned to upset the luxury segment pecking order ? just a little later than originally planned.

LONDON - Investigators were conducting further tests Wednesday in a bid to shed light on the death of Eva Rausing, one of Britain's richest women, whose body was found in her west London home.

Detectives were waiting to question her husband, Hans Kristian Rausing, who has been arrested in connection with her death but was admitted to a secure hospital for treatment on Tuesday, according to the Evening Standard.

The police were treating U.S.-born Eva Rausing's?death?as unexplained.?

Eva Rausing?and her husband were wealthy philanthropists who have both waged a long battle against drug addiction. They were arrested on drug charges in 2008 after Eva Rausing was caught trying to smuggle crack cocaine and heroin into the U.S. Embassy in London in her handbag.?

Hans Kristian Rausing, 49, is an heir to the TetraPak fortune his father built as a globally successful manufacturer of laminated cardboard drink containers.?

US-born heiress found dead in London mansion

Police found Eva Rausing dead at her multimillion-dollar London home on Monday.?

The Metropolitan Police said officers arrested a 49-year-old man Monday in connection with the case. Police did not release the man's name but offered details of the arrest in response to a question about Hans Kristian Rausing.?

They said they arrested the man on suspicion of drug possession, and that a subsequent search of an address in London's upmarket Belgravia neighborhood related to that arrest led to the discovery of Eva Rausing's body later that day.?

Police said he remained under arrest Wednesday but was receiving medical attention at a location away from a police station. They would not say if the man was under guard.?

'Devoted wife'
Eva Rausing's parents, Tom and Nancy Kemeny, and the rest of her family paid tribute to a "devoted wife" and mother of four "much loved and wonderful children," saying they were devastated over her death. Their statement also alluded to her struggles.?

"During her short lifetime she made a huge philanthropic impact, supporting a large number of charitable causes, not only financially, but using her own personal experiences," the family said in a statement. "She bravely fought her health issues for many years."?

A statement from her in-laws, Hans and Marit Rausing, said they were "deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death."?

Eva Rausing supported a number of charities that helped to fight addictions. One of them -- Action on Addiction -- was among the first to express sadness over her death and praise her "wonderfully generous" support over the years.?

She also was listed as a long-time supporter of The Prince's Foundation, part of a group of nonprofit charities that have Prince Charles as their patron. His office said the prince was told of Rausing's death but did not offer further comment.?

In a diplomatic scandal in 2008, Eva Rausing was arrested outside the U.S. Embassy in for reportedly trying to bring crack cocaine and heroin into building in her handbag. Police later found small amounts of cocaine, crack and heroin in a search of the couple's house. They were charged with drug possession but prosecutors later agreed to drop the charges in exchange for formal police warnings.?

At the time, the Rausing family issued a statement saying relatives were "deeply saddened" by the couple's drug problems and hoped they could overcome their addictions.?

Hans Rausing's Swedish father helped transform TetraPak into a hugely successful manufacturer. The fortune of the senior Rausing and his family is estimated at 4.3 billion pounds ($6.7 billion) by the Sunday Times Rich List.?

Cinema rig takes the heat out of your NEX5N, slides in the accessories instead

The Sony NEX-5N, with it's goodly APS-C sized sensor and decent video quality, still has a couple of knocks against it as a video cam: its bitty size makes it hard to rig up and it doesn't dissipate heat well. Tinkerer Richard Gale has addressed those tics with his prototype NEX-5N cinema housing, by adding a heat sink and fan to stop the overheating problem and a possible anamorphic adapter and matte box to accommodate filters and gels. The provisional £1,500 price ($2,400) would get you the housing, NEX-5N with kit lens, 5" Sony LCD, and accessories, while the anamorphic kit with the matte box is still just a concept with no price tag. Neither idea will happen unless he gets enough orders, but wearing the boxy black outfit might finally give the petite mirrorless cam a shot of big-boy film cred.

Garmin's Fenix GPS watch is rough and ready ??for a price

5 hrs.

Veteran GPS maker Garmin released a new GPS watch Tuesday aimed at outdoors enthusiasts: The Fenix is ruggedized and made with off-the-path trekking in mind. At $400, you won't find it in the bargain bin, but serious hikers may decide that it's worth the extra?cash.

The new watch has a similar design to the company's previous Forerunner watches: a round LCD face with buttons around the edge. There's no touch-enabled surface like its most expensive predecessors, probably because it wasn't compatible with the scratch-resistant face and waterproofing. It'll go down to 160 feet under and should shrug off the occasional tumble or errant branch.

The interface has a new mode that places you on a graphical representation of your path, which you can set beforehand with waypoints or create as you go with a GPS breadcrumb trail. That's good news for alpine hikers who may lose track of the trail when they leave it to check out a landmark or view. And of course it has a built-in compass, barometer, and altimeter so you can be sure of your location and bearing.

You'll keep track of your trips and manage paths using Garmin's software, and should be able to beam tracks and waypoints to other Garmin devices or "select smartphones," which they decline to name.

The Fenix should be available this Fall for $400. You can pick one up online or at your favorite outdoor retailer.
