Inherited risk factors for childhood leukemia are more common in Hispanic patients, study finds

ScienceDaily (Jan. 30, 2012) ? Hispanic children are more likely than those from other racial and ethnic backgrounds to be diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and are more likely to die of their disease. Work led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists has pinpointed genetic factors behind the grim statistics.

Researchers studying a gene called ARID5B linked eight common variants of the gene to an increased risk of not only developing pediatric ALL but of having the cancer return after treatment. Two more ARID5B variants were tied to higher odds of developing the disease. Investigators found that Hispanic children were up to twice as likely as their white counterparts to inherit a high risk-version of ARID5B.

"For years we have known about ethnic and racial disparities in ALL risk and outcome, but the biology behind it has been elusive. Therefore, it is truly exciting to be able to not only pin down the biological basis but to find that the same gene might be responsible for both differences. Children who inherit high-risk versions of ARID5B are more likely to develop ALL in the first place and then more likely to fail therapy," said Jun Yang, Ph.D., an assistant member of the St. Jude Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the paper's corresponding author.

The work was done in collaboration with the Children's Oncology Group (COG), a U.S. based research cooperative study group focused on childhood cancer research and clinical trials. The study appears in the January 30 online edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Multiple factors contribute to cancer development, and inheriting a high-risk version of ARID5B is not enough to cause the disease, Yang said. These findings set the stage for exciting research in understanding how genetic, environmental and other factors combine in ALL, especially in the context of racial and ethnic disparity, he said.

"These and other genomic studies suggest we are poised to finally make significant progress in eliminating racial disparities in this catastrophic disease," Yang said. Additional work is needed to translate these findings into new clinical tools, he added.

Each year ALL is found in about 3,000 U.S. children, making it the most common childhood cancer. The incidence varies by self-declared race and ethnicity with rates for Hispanic individuals 50 percent higher than for non-Hispanic white individuals. For this study, researchers used genetic variations rather than individual self-report to define ancestry. White children were defined as having greater than 95 percent European ancestry and Hispanics children as having greater than 10 percent Native American ancestry.

Although the work of St. Jude researchers and others is helping to close the survival gap, Hispanic children are still less likely than children from other racial or ethnic backgrounds to be alive five years after diagnosis.

This study builds on the earlier St. Jude research that linked different versions of the ARID5B gene to ALL risk.

St. Jude and COG investigators partnered to see if variations in the ARID5B gene help to explain differences in either the incidence or the outcome of ALL in white and Hispanic patients. ARID5B belongs to a family of genes called transcription factors. They play a role in the normal development of white blood cells, which are targeted in ALL. Evidence suggests the gene also influences how methotrexate, a key anti-leukemia drug, is metabolized.

To find ARID5B variants related to ALL, the study compared the gene in 330 Hispanic children with ALL and 541 Hispanic individuals without ALL. Researchers also checked ARID5B in 978 white ALL patients and 1,046 white individuals without the cancer.

Although the high-risk versions of ARID5B were found in both white and Hispanic patients, those variants were 1.5 to two times more common in Hispanic children than in white children.

Individuals inherit two copies of every gene, one from each parent. Children with one high-risk version of ARID5B were up to 80 percent more likely to develop ALL than others. Inheriting two copies of a high-risk version of the gene translated into a 3.6-fold increased ALL risk.

Researchers also found evidence linking ARID5B variants to relapse risk in 1,605 pediatric ALL patients enrolled in COG studies. Yang and his colleagues previously linked that level of Native American ancestry to a higher relapse risk in Hispanic ALL patients. Patients in this study who inherited a high-risk version of ARID5B were 50 percent more likely to relapse than other patients. They were also more likely to die of their cancer.

The study's first author is Heng Xu of St. Jude. Other authors are Cheng Cheng, Deqing Pei, Yiping Fan, Wenjian Yang, Geoff Neale, William E. Evans, Ching-Hon Pui, and Mary Relling, all of St. Jude; Meenakshi Devidas, University of Florida, Gainesville; Paul Scheet, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Esteban Gonzalez Burchard, Dara Torgerson, Celeste Eng and Mignon Loh, all of University of California, San Francisco; Michael Dean, National Cancer Institute; Federico Antillon, Unidad Nacional de Oncologia Pediatrica, Guatemala; Naomi Winick, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; Paul Martin, Duke University; Cheryl Willman, University of New Mexico; Bruce Camitta, Medical College of Wisconsin; Gregory Reaman, George Washington University, Children's National Medical Center; William Carroll, New York University; and Stephen Hunger, University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children's Hospital Colorado.

U.S. Embassy shelters Americans amid Egypt NGO crackdown (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Several American citizens have taken refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Cairo amid a sharpening dispute between Washington and Egypt over U.S.-funded pro-democracy groups in the country, the State Department said on Monday.

"We can confirm that a handful of U.S. citizens have opted to stay in the embassy compound in Cairo while waiting for permission to depart Egypt," State Department spokeswoman Kate Starr said.

The unusual step of offering ordinary U.S. citizens diplomatic refuge follows a crackdown by Egypt's military-led government on non-governmental organizations, including several funded by the U.S. government, which saw travel bans imposed on six American staffers including a son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Egyptian police raided the groups in late December as part of an investigation into foreign funding of 17 pro-democracy and human rights groups, part of what civil society groups say has been a broader crackdown on critics of the army's heavy-handed tactics in dealing with street unrest.

Washington has strongly criticized the move, which has cast a pall over U.S.-Egyptian relations as the most populous Arab nation reaches a critical stage in its uncertain transition away from authoritarian rule.

"We have made clear our concerns about this issue and our disappointment that these several citizens are not being allowed to depart Egypt," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Monday.

Leading U.S. lawmakers have also voiced outrage over the incident, and American officials have repeatedly warned that Washington may have to take a fresh look at U.S. aid to Egypt's military, which runs about $1.3 billion per year.

The six U.S. citizens hit with travel bans work with the National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute. Both receive U.S. public funding and are loosely affiliated with the two major U.S. political parties.

The State Department did not provide details on the Americans sheltering in the embassy, although officials at the National Democratic Institute said none of their staff had been relocated. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry declined to comment.

Another State Department spokeswoman, Victoria Nuland, described the refuge offer as "a unique situation" and dismissed suggestions that the aim was to shield the U.S. citizens from potential arrest.

"There is no expectation that any of these individuals are seeking to avoid any kind of judicial process," Nuland said.

"We do not feel that they are in physical danger at the moment. That is a different matter than whether they are being persecuted in the Egyptian judicial system," Nuland added.

MILITARY DELEGATION

An Egyptian military delegation is expected in Washington this week for regular talks that are expected to focus on the impasse over the NGOs, U.S. officials said.

Nuland, while stressing that the visit had been planned before the NGO dispute erupted, said the Egyptians could expect firm words during their U.S. meetings.

"We have concerns about the fact that we have not been able to resolve this situation. That is the message that we are giving the Egyptian government in the strongest terms," she said.

The delegation, made up of four major generals, was expected in Washington on Tuesday, diplomatic sources said.

President Barack Obama spoke with the head of Egypt's ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, on January 20. He stressed the importance of the NGOs and discussed Egypt's request for $3.2 billion from the International Monetary Fund.

In a weekend call to Tantawi, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta urged the Egyptians to lift the travel ban and expressed concern over restrictions placed on NGOs, the Pentagon said.

The Obama administration is finalizing its budget for the 2013 fiscal year, which will be presented on February 13 and is expected to include continued assistance for Egypt's military, albeit subject to new conditions imposed by U.S. lawmakers.

Those include evidence that Egyptian military authorities are committed to holding free and fair elections and protecting freedom of expression, association, and religion.

GOP candidates' pitch to voters: I'm your leader (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The pitch from the Republican presidential contenders to voters sounds a lot like the children's game of follow the leader.

When Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich aren't puffing up their own leadership credentials, they're running down the leadership skills of one another and of President Barack Obama.

If anyone missed Monday's conference call from the Romney campaign about Gingrich's record as a "failed leader," not to worry. They could have tuned in to Tuesday's conference call. Or Wednesday's. Or Thursday's. Or checked out the "unreliable leader" banner splashed across a Romney news release that labeled Gingrich "unhinged."

Romney's political biography, meanwhile, is all about his leadership as a businessman, Massachusetts governor and savior of the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

It's hard to miss Gingrich's frequent broadsides at Romney for failing to provide consistent, visionary leadership. Or the former House speaker's pronouncements that he, by contrast, offers "exactly the kind of bold, tough leader the American people want." Or Gingrich's descriptions of all that was accomplished in his four years as speaker in the 1990s.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, trailing in the polls, keeps trying to muscle his way into the conversation by offering himself as the steady bet who can be counted on to offer more reliable conservative leadership than "erratic" Gingrich or "moderate" Romney.

In a race where all the candidates are trying to out-conservative one another, stressing leadership credentials gives the GOP rivals a way to try to distinguish themselves. In a year when Obama's own leadership skills are seen as one of his weakest qualities, it gives the Republicans one more arrow in their quiver as they argue over who would be most electable in a matchup with Obama come November.

Leadership is always a part of the equation in presidential elections. In 2008, for example, the candidates all were abuzz with claims that they offered "transformational" leadership.

"I want to transform this country," Obama said when he announced he was running.

This year, leadership is getting an extra dose of attention, perhaps because of statistics such as this: The share of Americans viewing Obama as a strong leader slipped from 77 percent at the start of his presidency to 52 percent in a Pew Research Center poll released this month. Among Republicans, only about one-fourth of those surveyed in the most recent poll said Obama was a strong leader, compared with 80 percent of Democrats.

At a campaign debate last week in Tampa, Fla., Gingrich and Romney both turned a question about electability into an answer about the L-word.

"This is going to come down a question of leadership," Romney said. Then the former Massachusetts governor recited his track record as a leader in business and government and took a dig at Gingrich for having to "resign in disgrace" when he was speaker in the 1990s.

Gingrich, answering the same question, aligned himself with the leadership record of conservative hero Ronald Reagan and offered himself as someone "prepared to be controversial when necessary" to bring about great change.

The answers offer a window into how differently the two candidates define leadership: Romney more as a manager with business school credentials, Gingrich more as a big-thinking visionary.

The leadership argument is a particularly potent campaign weapon for Romney because a number of Republicans who served in Congress with Gingrich have been happy to describe his shortcomings in running the House.

"If you were somebody trying to serve with him, you were always sort of left standing with your hands empty in terms of moving forward with an actual plan or putting a plan to paper," Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif., said of Gingrich on a Romney campaign conference call Thursday. "So for me, it's an example that he's just not an effective leader. I think Mitt has the temperament and the ability to lead."

Gingrich, who resigned after a spate of ethics problems and a poor showing for House Republicans in the 1998 elections, managed to turn even his resignation as speaker into evidence that he's a strong leader.

"I took responsibility for the fact that our results weren't as good as they should be," he said in the Tampa debate. "I think that's what a leader should do."

As for the turbulence of his tenure as speaker, Gingrich casts that, too, as evidence of his bold leadership.

"Look, I wish everybody had loved me, but I'd rather be effective representing the American people than be popular inside Washington," he said earlier in the campaign.

Stephen Wayne, a presidential scholar at Georgetown University, said the harsh judgment of Obama's presidential leadership by Republicans and even some Democrats in part is due to the high hopes that he raised during the 2008 campaign. Obama the president has been measured against the words of Obama the candidate ever since.

Now that it's campaign season again, says Wayne, "he's not competing against his own image, he's competing against a real life person that has frailties. ... In a sense, that lowers the bar for Obama."

Did the Galaxy S III just pop up on Samsung's support site?

GT-i9300
Seriously, we can't caveat this one enough -- there is no way of knowing if this is in fact the Galaxy S III or, if it is, when it might come to market -- but, it looks like Samsungs "next big smartphone" just made a cameo on the company's support pages. Listed as the GT-i9300, the mystery device reared its head over at the Global Download Center of the United Arab Emerites site. If Sammy is to keep with its naming scheme i93XX would be a flagship device -- the i90XX line was the Galaxy S, i91XX represents the S2 series, while the i9250 and i9220 are the Nexus and Note respectively. As we warned before though, this could be some mid-range device and Samsung could be changing its naming conventions. Or, perhaps, its yet another variation of an existing model. Still, we'll take this as a good sign that Seoul squad has something interesting brewing.

Demi Moore 911 call: 'She smoked something'

By Baker Machado and Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Phil Mccarten / Reuters

"Send an ambulance right now. This is an emergency."

So begins the dramatic 911 call, in which Demi Moore's friends are desperately trying to get an ambulance to the actress' Beverly Hills home as quickly as possible, which was released this morning by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

On the heavily redacted recording, which lasts about 10 minutes, one of Moore's friends begins arguing with the dispatcher amid confusion over which agency covers the neighborhood and should be sending paramedics.

"Why is there not an ambulance coming now?" the woman says testily before explaining what caused the star to "act crazy."

"She smoked something. It's not marijuana but it's similar to incense. She seems to be having convulsions of some sort.

"She's semi-conscious ... barely. She's convulsing."

The phone is passed to another woman, who tells the dispatcher, "She's not breathing normally ... she's burning up."

Asked if she knows exactly what Moore smoked or any other drugs she might have consumed, the second woman replies: "She's been having some issues with some other stuff lately. I don't know what she's been taking or not."

The dispatcher calms the woman down and explains how to treat Moore, stressing to keep her airway open.

By the end of the call, the paramedics have arrived to take Moore to Sherman Oaks Hospital, where she has since been discharged.

As E! News has previously reported, the 49-year-old Moore had been hosting a birthday party for a friend at the time and had exhibited "pretty hyper" behavior in the moments before the 911 call.

What is a 3D printer, anyway? (The Week)

New York ? Notorious peer-to-peer site The Pirate Bay says the next age of file-sharing will be 3D printing. But how, exactly, does that work?

Controversial file-sharing site The Pirate Bay usually plays host to music and movies. But now the site's creators are working on a new download section that will allow users to freely distribute files a 3D printer can translate into real-life objects, from?mugs to toothbrushes to toys. But how, exactly, does a 3D printer work? And is it really the next battleground for online copyright?

What does a 3D printer do?
It's a form of manufacturing that takes three-dimensional image files and "prints" them into physical objects using a variety of materials, typically plastic. The printers themselves are usually "a little larger than a hat box," says Reggie Ugwu at Complex, though they do come in larger sizes. Image files can be created from programs such as Google SketchUp, AutoCad, and Adobe Illustrator to be sent to a 3D printer through a USB connection ? just like you would a normal document.

SEE ALSO: Students panic over Wikipedia's blackout: The best jokes

?

How does it "print" an object?
Essentially, it prints out the object "layer by layer," says Ugwu, "similar to the way a printer creates text and images line by line." It's an "additive process," says Tony Hoffman at PC Mag. Unlike sawing or sanding, which are subtractive processes, the 3D-printer?builds an object "from scratch." If you're printing a plastic figurine, for example, the "ink" would be melted plastic poured through an extruder and built up one thin cross-section at a time. It's time-consuming: The printing process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

How much does a 3D printer typically cost?
They don't come cheap. The smallest commercial units available today cost upwards of $1,000, with the highest quality models fetching much more.

SEE ALSO: The massive federal crackdown on Megaupload: A guide

?

Who uses them?
Anyone, really. Architects often use them to produce scaled-down models of building units, and artists are known to use them to produce works of art. One enterprising orthopedic surgeon used a 3D printer recently to make replicas of a patient's bones in preparation for surgery ? saving his hospital thousands of dollars.

And you'll be able to download 3D image files from Pirate Bay?
Soon enough. "We believe that the next step in copying will be made from digital form into physical form. It will be physical objects. Or as we decided to call them: Physibles," the site's proprietors wrote in a blog post. Anyone can upload, share, and download designs for toys (or one day even shoes)?directly from the Pirate Bay website.

SEE ALSO: After the blackouts: What's next for SOPA?

?

Is this really the next frontier for copyright?
It might not be. With its entrance into the world of 3D printables, the website "might not actually break copyright laws," says Nick Bilton the The New York Times. According to old copyright rules, recreating an object considered "useful" is not a violation of the law, whereas recreating an object that's "purely aesthetic" ? like a piece of art ? is. Thus, a "useful object may be patentable," but copyright is a different area of the law altogether.

Italy promises to back Afghanistan after 2014 (AP)

BERLIN ? German lawmakers have voted to extend the country's military mission in Afghanistan by a year, signing off on a plan to gradually reduce troop levels toward an eventual complete withdrawal.

The plan was agreed to by a large majority Thursday. It extends the troop deployment through January 2013, but sets a ceiling of 4,900 soldiers, reduced from the maximum 5,350 over the last year.

The overall reductions are part of plans by the U.S. and other allies to withdraw combat troops by the end of 2014.

Also Thursday, Italian Premier Mario Monti assured visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai that Italy would give economic and civilian support after 2014 withdrawal. The two signed a long-term cooperation agreement on the first stop of Karzai's European tour.

Marine sergeant faces sentencing in Iraq killings (Reuters)

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif (Reuters) ? The U.S. Marine sergeant accused of leading a 2005 massacre of 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha returned to a military court at Camp Pendleton near San Diego on Tuesday to face sentencing for his guilty plea to one count of dereliction of duty.

Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, 31, entered his plea on Monday as part of a deal with military prosecutors in which more serious charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault were dismissed.

The guilty plea cut short Wuterich's court-martial, ending the final prosecution of alleged atrocities that sparked public outrage and brought international condemnation of U.S. troops.

As part of his guilty plea, Wuterich accepted responsibility for providing negligent verbal instructions to the Marines under his command when he told them to "shoot first and ask questions later," which resulted in the death of innocent civilians.

He faces a maximum sentence of three months of confinement, forfeiture of two-thirds of his pay for three months and a reduction in rank when he is sentenced on Tuesday, a Camp Pendleton spokesman said.

Any discharge process Wuterich may face will be separate from the plea and sentencing.

Appearing in court on Tuesday, Wuterich, wearing his military uniform, sat stoically, hands folded and elbows resting on the table, and calmly listened. His lawyer, Neal Puckett, questioned one of several character witnesses expected to be called before sentencing is imposed.

Wuterich was accused of being the ringleader in a series of November 19, 2005, shootings and grenade attacks that left two dozen civilians dead in Haditha, a city west of Baghdad that was then a hotbed of insurgent activity.

The killings were portrayed by Iraqi witnesses as a massacre of unarmed civilians -- men, women and children -- carried out by Marines in anger after a member of their unit was killed by a roadside bomb.

Lawyers for the troops involved argued the deaths resulted from a fast-moving situation in which the Marines believed they were under enemy fire. Wuterich was originally charged with murder in the case.

Six out of the eight Marines originally accused in the case had their charges dismissed by military judges, and a seventh was cleared of criminal wrongdoing.

Wuterich enlisted in the Marines after his 1998 graduation from high school, where he was an athletic honor-roll student and played with the marching band.

He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq when the Haditha incident occurred.

Government opens case against accused swindler Stanford (Reuters)

HOUSTON (Reuters) ? Texas financier Allen Stanford used lies and bribes to steal the hard-earned savings of his customers, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

The former billionaire is accused of selling certificates of deposit from his bank in Antigua and using the money to finance his lifestyle, in one of the biggest white collar cases since Bernard Madoff.

"He told them lie, after lie, after lie," prosecutor Gregg Costa told the jury at the start of Stanford's trial on criminal fraud charges in federal court in Houston.

Stanford, 61, dressed in a grey suit and white shirt, pleaded not guilty to a 14-count indictment. "I plead not guilty to every count," the former billionaire said in an emphatic voice.

He rocked in his chair, listening intently as Costa laid out the government's case of a sprawling $7 billion Ponzi scheme originating with Stanford International Bank in Antigua. Stanford used it as "his own private piggy bank," Costa said.

"Really, that is the perfect name for the bank, because the bank was there to enrich Mr. Stanford."

Stanford spent millions of dollars of investor funds on his hobby of cricket, his private airplanes and a company that was formed to take care of his yacht, the Sea Eagle, Costa said.

He bribed his accountant and a regulator in Antigua in an effort to keep U.S. authorities at bay, Costa said.

Robert Scardino, one of Stanford's lawyers, told the jury that the Texas native was an astute businessman whose business was ruined when the government seized it in 2009.

"Stanford was kind of an absentee CEO, a visionary," Scardino told jurors.

He argued that every dime investors put into CDs issued from the Antigua bank was repaid over the course of 22 years.

"He paid every penny that was promised," Scardino said. "Never once failed, no evidence of a fraud."

Stanford's businesses and investments were all legitimate until the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed civil charges in February 2009 and seized all of Stanford's assets, Scardino said.

Witnesses for the prosecution include former employees, financial advisers who allegedly peddled certificates of deposit for the bank and Stanford's former chief financial officer, James Davis, who is the only co-defendant who has pleaded guilty to the scheme.

Stanford will take the stand to answer any questions the prosecution has and talk about his charitable works on Antigua, Scardino said.

The defense may also call accountants and other financial experts who can attest to the accuracy of the bank's documents, Scardino said.

Scientists pause research with lab-bred bird flu (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The scientists who created easier-to-spread versions of the deadly bird flu say they're temporarily halting more research, as international specialists debate what should happen next.

Last month, U.S. officials had urged two labs not to publicly reveal how they brewed the new viruses, for fear would-be bioterrorists might copy them. Critics also worried a lab accident might allow the strains to escape.

The viruses are held in high-security labs in the U.S. and the Netherlands. They were created to help learn how bird flu might mutate to become a bigger threat to people. But in a letter Friday to the journals Science and Nature, the scientists said they would "pause" additional research for 60 days as world health officials debate how to learn from the work, safely.

David Furnish Apologizes for Trashing Madonna's Speech

Elton John's partner David Furnish has more to say to Madonna -- but this time, it's an apology. Four days after slamming the Material Girl for her Golden Globes win (which shut out Sir Elton) and then criticizing her acceptance speech as "embarrassing in its narcissism," Furnish, 49, would like to make amends.

Relief in Spain, tension in Greece for euro zone (Reuters)

MADRID/ATHENS (Reuters) ? The embattled euro zone cleared a major funding test on Thursday when Spain romped through a key bond sale, while signs pointed to only a mild recession for the 17-nation bloc.

Talks between Greece and its creditors remained deadlocked, however, threatening to derail a needed bailout and keep the region's all-consuming debt crisis on the boil.

Ireland passed the latest review of its European Union-International Monetary Fund bailout, although it faces difficulty keeping its deficit reduction going if its economy sours.

A Reuters poll of economists pointed to the euro zone wallowing in a mild recession until the second half of this year, but contracting by just 0.3 percent for the year compared with a forecast three months ago of 0.9 percent.

At the same time, the IMF is expecting the euro zone economy to contract by 0.5 percent in 2012, according to draft document reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.

Neither figure is comforting, but both suggest a downturn is seen as shallow and probably short.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, speaking in Abu Dhabi, repeated his view that the euro zone economy is fragile.

"We see a softening business cycle in Europe with significant downside risk. We also see some tentative signs... but I have to be quite cautious here... some tentative signs of stabilization of economic activity at low levels," he said.

"All this is subject to downside risk, in other words it can get worse."

One key risk is if the debt crisis intensifies, pushing borrowing costs to unsustainable levels and driving a further wedge between the robust northern euro zone economies such as Germany and The Netherlands, and the debt-laden south.

    CHEAP MONEY

Spain's auction of benchmark 10-year bonds was a major test of investor appetite in the peripheral euro zone country. Short-term auctions last week had been successful but Thursday's sale was for longer-dated bonds.

It raised more than forecast at 3 billion euros, at a yield of 5.403 percent, a drop of more than 1.5 percentage points since the same bond was last sold in November.

The sale signaled that markets have largely shrugged off last week's salvo of euro zone rating downgrades from Standard & Poor's, an impression reinforced by a strong bond sale in Paris.

"These results are bullish for both Spain and the broader periphery and stand to further underpin the ongoing 'risk-on' tone... For now.. the glass half-full brigade have the upper hand," said Richard McGuire, rate strategist at Rabobank in London.

Euro zone bond auctions have been largely successful since the ECB offered nearly half a trillion euros of cheap, three-year loans to push investors towards buying government bonds and lowering borrowing costs.

"We start seeing also a fall of the longer-term part of the yield curve as well. I think that by and large this measure has really avoided a serious funding crisis that European banks might have to face," Draghi told reporters.

    LITTLE PROGRESS IN GREECE

Greece remains the fly in the ointment, with Athens locked in negotiations with creditors on a deal to reschedule its debt and avoid an uncontrolled default.

Nearly a week after talks hit an impasse, the two sides remain bogged down over the coupon, or interest payment, that Greece must offer on new bonds under a debt swap.

Athens and its foreign lenders offered a coupon of just over 3.5 percent during a two-hour meeting on Wednesday, but bondholders rejected that as too low, one source said. They were angling for a coupon of at least 4 percent, one source said.

A senior Greek official also played down speculation that terms of a deal had been nearly pinned down, saying: "Nothing has been concluded yet."

The two sides must thrash out a deal within days to pave the way for Greece to receive a new infusion of aid and avoid bankruptcy when 14.5 billion euros ($18.5 billion) of bond redemptions fall due in late March.

Kept afloat by bailout loans, Greece faces the threat of having to leave the euro zone and slumping into further economic and social misery if it fails to come to grips with its debt, including securing a deal with the private bond holders.

Greece's central bank governor made an urgent appeal to his countrymen and their leaders to implement reforms or risk being pushed into an ignominious euro zone exit.

"If we ignore reality this time, the outcome will be a given: the country will become economically and politically isolated," Bank of Greece Governor George Provopoulos said.

Document: Gross traveled to Cuba 5 times in 2009 (AP)

HAVANA ? An American man imprisoned in Cuba on charges of crimes against the state was being tracked by island authorities since 2004 and traveled there at least five times in 2009 to set up sophisticated wireless Internet networks, according to a purported leaked court filing.

The document, the most detailed account so far laying out prosecutors' case against Maryland resident Alan Gross, gives blow-by-blow descriptions of the man's work with Cuban Jewish communities to establish independent, satellite-based wireless networks in synagogues in three cities.

U.S. and Cuban officials would not say whether the document is authentic. It was posted this week on the U.S.-based blog Cafe Fuerte, which did not reveal its source.

But Gross' U.S. lawyer, Peter J. Kahn, called it evidence that his client, who has acknowledged working with the Jewish community on Internet connections, is innocent of trying to undermine the island's communist-run government.

"This document is further confirmation of what we have said all along ? the Cuban authorities cannot point to any action by Alan P. Gross intended to subvert their government," Peter J. Kahn said in a statement, without explicitly confirming the document's authenticity.

"The trial evidence cited in the document confirms that Alan's actions were intended to improve the Internet and Intranet connectivity of Cuba's small, peaceful, non-dissident, Jewish community," he said.

The filing, apparently from Gross' sentencing in which he was given 15 years in prison, contains a detailed account of testimony and evidence presented against him at his March 2011 trial. Among other details, it says Gross came under scrutiny beginning in 2004 and alleges he recruited Americans as "mules" to help him bring restricted telecommunications equipment to the island.

Havana considers U.S. development programs like the one Gross was working on tantamount to attempts at regime change, and the document alleges that the true intent for the wireless networks was subversive.

"The goal (was for) these modern means of satellite communication to be used by the true intended recipients of this 'Program,' the members of the internal counterrevolution," it reads.

As evidence, it cites files recovered from a seized memory stick that allegedly talked about "communicating securely in repressive environments" and mentioned "political activists who operate in non-permissive environments." It also said Gross told users of the wireless networks he set up not to use their last names in their email addresses.

Gross' imprisonment has been yet another sore point between Washington and Havana, and the U.S. government has urged Cuban authorities to release him.

Earlier this week Cuba hinted that while Gross was convicted of crimes against the state, it would consider sending him home under the right circumstances.

"The Cuban government has communicated to the U.S. government its willingness to find a humanitarian solution to the case of Mr. Alan Gross on a reciprocal humanitarian basis," said a letter signed by the deputy chief of mission at the Cuban Interests Section in Washington and posted on the Foreign Ministry's website.

The message, which was originally sent to The Washington Post in response to an editorial demanding Gross be freed, then raised the cases of five Cuban agents serving long jail terms in the United States, though it stopped short of suggesting outright a prisoner swap.

Obama Kills the Pipeline and Stalls America (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Not only Republicans are outraged over Obama's decision to once more, stall the XL Pipeline, unions are too. Yet, undeterred by the pleas of job-hungry Americans the Obama administration has said no. Citing concerns for the environment, the president has once more placed his political agenda over the needs of our country.

Let's face it, America runs on oil. We all like the idea of getting away from dependence on fossil fuels, but we are not there yet. Society is not ready to give up everything it has and embrace the Chevy Volt. Even if we were, the need for oil still exists. There are factories, power companies, military needs and an entire nation of people that depend on the black gold. For the near future, America will rely on oil. It makes good sense to get it from a friendly neighbor instead of depending on oil from volatile nations.

America needs jobs. It has been reported the pipeline would bring 20,000 new jobs to the U.S. Obama's decision to stall the project has directly caused thousands of Americans to suffer. Logic and common sense clearly dictates the positive effects the pipeline would bring. Putting people to work, less dependence on oil from the middle east, a more substantial tax base, just to name a few.

Canada took considerable steps to ensure the environmental sanctity of the areas the pipeline would run through. Our northern neighbor has bent over backwards in its attempts to satisfy the needs of everyone involved. With Obama's rejection of the pipeline, Canada will probably sell the oil to China. That would insure our continued dependence on Middle East oil, and that would be ironic and foolish.

President Obama has thrown opportunity for our country out the window in favor of his own selfish ideals. It is unconscionable to forsake the needs of the many to pursue one's own desire, but this is exactly what Obama has done. His mind is living in a fantasy world of green that cannot be accomplished, and he does not care. He has abandoned his oath of office, and ignored the pleas of the entire nation in hopes that it all will somehow be OK.

(AP) ? The world last year wasn't quite as warm as it has been for most of the past decade, government scientists said Thursday, but it continues a general trend of rising temperatures.

The average global temperature was 57.9 degrees Fahrenheit, making 2011 the 11th hottest on record, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. That's 0.9 degrees warmer than the 20th century average, officials said. In fact, it was hotter than every year last century except 1998.

One reason 2011 was milder than recent years was the La Nina cooling of the central Pacific Ocean. La Ninas occur every few years and generally cause global temperatures to drop, but this was the warmest La Nina year on record.

And 2011 also was the warmest year on record for Spain and Norway, and the second warmest for the United Kingdom. In the United States, the average temperature of 53.8 was just 1 degree above normal, making last year only the 23rd warmest on record. But 17 cities ? including Houston, Miami, Trenton and Austin ? had their warmest years.

This marks the 35th straight year that global temperatures were warmer than normal. NOAA's records for world average temperatures date back to 1880.

"It would be premature to make any conclusion that we would see any hiatus of the longer-term warming trend," said Tom Karl, director of NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. "Global temperatures are continuing to increase."

NASA, which calculates global temperatures in a slightly different way, announced essentially the same temperature for the year. But NASA's record-keeping calls it the ninth warmest ever.

Both NASA climate scientist James Hansen and University of Victoria's Andrew Weaver said they expect that in the next few years the world will set yet a new record high temperature. 2010 tied for the hottest on record.

NOAA also released new figures for extreme weather. The agency recalculated the number of billion-dollar weather disasters in the U.S., bumping the total from 12 to 14. Officials added Tropical Storm Lee, which dumped rain from Maryland to New England in September, and a July hail and wind storm in Colorado to the list.

The 14 extreme events smash the old record of nine billion-dollar disasters in 2008.

"America has endured an unusually large number of extreme events, totaling damages of more than $55 billion," NOAA deputy administrator Kathryn Sullivan said. She blamed a variety of factors, including population changes.

For the year, a record 58 percent of the United States had either extreme rainfall or severe drought, about triple what is normal for the country. Seven states ? New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Indiana and Kentucky ? had their wettest years since those types of records were kept beginning in 1895. Texas had its driest year ever.

The record wet up north and dry down south fits with what climate change science predicts, but it is too early to say if 2011's precipitation extremes were due to global warming, Karl said. And the unusual number of deadly tornadoes can't be linked to global warming, he said.

But Kevin Trenberth, director of climate analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., which is a consortium of universities, said it's hard not to see the hand of man-made global warming behind the extremes.

"Where these events occur is largely driven by natural variability, but the fact that they are breaking records and causing tremendous damage when they do occur is undoubtedly because of the human stimulus," Trenberth said in an email.

Idris Elba Talks Thor 2, The Avengers, and Those Bond Rumors

idris elba thor sequel avengers james bond

Immediately following his win at the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony, ubiquitous fan-favorite Idris Elba was hit up by journalists wanting to know more about his upcoming film schedule, which could possibly include both Marvel?s Thor 2 and The Avengers, as well as the James Bond franchise somewhere down the road (if rumor mongering is anything to go by).

Elba is currently back in Toronto, where he?s working on filmmaker Guillermo del Toro?s anticipated sci-fi/giant monster movie, Pacific Rim. However, before he departed the Globes event, the English actor dropped a few tidbits about which upcoming movies he will for certain show up in ? as well as which ones remain possibilities.

MTV asked Elba about whether or not he?ll be reprising his well-liked turn as the Guardian of Worlds, Heimdall, in either (or both) this summer?s The Avengers and the upcoming Thor sequel. Elba revealed that he has not yet met with newly-minted Thor 2 helmer Alan Taylor, but that he?s a lock to return for that comic book flick; Avengers, on the other hand, is a project he?s ?unsure? about right now.

That leaves Elba in the same boat as his Thor co-star, Jaimie Alexander, who also refused to rule out the appearance of her onscreen Asgardian counterpart, the warrior gal Sif, in writer/director Joss Whedon?s superhero teamup flick. Obviously, at this point, their theoretical parts in the film would amount to nothing more than a glorified cameo, but there remains the chance that both characters (as well as Asgard itself) could appear briefly during The Avengers ? or, rather, in an after-credits scene, in keeping with Marvel Studio?s tradition.

Idris Elba as Heimdall in 'Thor'

Idris Elba as Heimdall in 'Thor'

In addition to his aforementioned comments, Elba also spoke briefly with journalists at the Golden Globes about his possibly becoming Daniel Craig?s successor to the 007 throne. Here?s what he had to say:

?There was a huge rumor that once?Daniel?Craig finishes playing Bond that they were looking for someone different and my name was in that mix. And I answered a bunch of questions and the bottom line is of course, I?d be honoured to play the part if it comes my way.?

Elba previously made it clear that he?s simply interested in portraying a new cinematic incarnation of James Bond, rather than playing ?a black version? of the iconic secret agent. Craig is reportedly being considered to portray 007 for five more films, following the release of Skyfall later this year, but that deal is far from set in stone; not to mention, there?s been no word as to whether or not Craig actually wants?to continue wearing the Bond suit for that long.

In other words: don?t count out Elba or any other rumored candidates (like Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender) as contenders to eventually take on the title of Mr. Bond just?yet.

    -

The Avengers will be released in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on May 4th, 2012.

Thor 2 is slated for a U.S. theatrical release on November 15th, 2013.

Russian space probe turned space junk crash will have worldwide audience

According to ESA, studies by the Russian space agency and NASA indicate that Phobos-Grunt's fuel tanks should burst high above the Earth, releasing a load of propellant that will subsequently dissipate.

A coordinated global campaign is monitoring a wayward Russian Mars probe that's slated to crash to Earth in the next few days, the European Space Agency has announced.

The doomed?Phobos-Grunt spacecraft, which Russian officials estimate will re-enter Earth's atmosphere between Saturday and Monday (Jan. 14-16), is now officially a target for the 12-member Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee, or IADC for short.

"An IADC re-entry prediction campaign is ongoing since January 2. Phobos-Grunt was identified to be no high-risk object," said Heiner Klinkrad, head of the space debris office at the European Space Agency's (ESA) European Space Operations Centerin Darmstadt, Germany. "Hence, this will be adopted as our annual 'test campaign' for 2012," he told SPACE.com.

The determination that Phobos-Grunt is not a high-risk?piece of space junk??is due to the relatively low dry mass of the errant spacecraft ? just 2.5 tons. There is about 11 tons of toxic propellant onboard, adding up to the probe?s total mass of 13.5 tons.

According to ESA, studies by the Russian space agency (known as Roscosmos) and NASA indicate that Phobos-Grunt's fuel tanks should burst high above the Earth, releasing a load of propellant that will subsequently dissipate. [Photos of the Phobos-Grunt mission]

"Because it was stuck in low Earth orbit rather than heading towards Mars, this has meant that it's full of fuel too," said Alice Gorman, a lecturer in the School of Humanities, Department of Archaeology at Flinders University in South Australia.

Gorman specializes in space archaeology and noted that the fuel tanks, according to the Russian space agency, are made of aluminum.?

"More than 50 percent of all re-entered spacecraft material is titanium, beryllium or steel, which has a melting point twice that of aluminum, so the likelihood of the fuel tanks surviving is very low,? Gorman said. "The fuel is reported to be hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide, which boil at 113 degrees Celsius and 21 degrees C (235 F to 69 F) respectively, so it will evaporate at high altitude once the tanks go."

    Phobos-Grunt leftovers

Roscosmos has said that, at most, 20 to 30 fragments of Phobos-Grunt, weighing a total of less than 440 pounds (200 kilograms), may reach Earth?s surface. However, given that most of our planet's surface is covered by water, the probability that these pieces will?fall onto populated terrain?is seen as very small.

Phobos-Grunt also carries a small Chinese Mars orbiter called Yinghuo-1. Chinese state media declared the Yinghuo-1 probe a loss back in mid-November.

ESA?s Space Debris Office in Darmstadt hosts the IADC database that's used to exchange orbit data and re-entry predictions among IADC members, a membership roster that includes NASA and Roscosmos.

IADC member agencies also include European national agencies and the Chinese, Canadian, Japanese, Ukrainian and Indian space agencies.

Results from the Phobos?Grunt monitoring campaign will be used by IADC members to improve their models and make future predictions of?space debris re-entry?more accurate, officials said.

"Taking this step demonstrates the increasing trend by space actors to take voluntary cooperative action to protect the space and Earth environments and share risk," said Joanne Irene Gabrynowicz, director of the National Center for Remote Sensing, Air, and Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law.

"It is a practical application of the legal fact that outer space is a global commons," Gabrynowicz told SPACE.com.

    Survivable return capsule

Predicting the exact time that Phobos-Grunt will slip into Earth?s atmosphere ?and over what part of the Earth the craft will re-enter ? is anybody?s guess at the moment.

"Right now, due to the large number of uncertainties in the orbit and space environment affecting the satellite, the indications are that?Phobos-Grunt could re-enter?between January 13-17, between 51.4 degrees north and 51.4 degrees south," Klinkrad said in a recent ESA statement.

Phobos-Grunt launched on Nov. 8 (Nov. 9 in Moscow). The probe was supposed to land on Phobos ? one of two moons circling the Red Planet ? collect soil samples and then send those specimens back to Earth in 2014 ("grunt" means "soil" in Russian).

However, shortly after launch, the probe failed to boost itself out of Earth orbit on an interplanetary trajectory.

    That's LIFE

The wayward Russian probe carries a nose-cone-shaped descent vehicle that was designed to haul back to Earth bits and pieces of Phobos. That hardware is likely to survive re-entry, since it was built to plunge through Earth?s atmosphere and make a hard landing.

The return capsule was supposed to touch down at the Sary Shagan missile test range in Kazakhstan.

Tucked inside the capsule is the?Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment?(LIFE) designed and built by the Planetary Society, a United States-based?nonprofit?organization. This biomodule was devised to assess how spending years in deep space affects organisms.

"Because we can?t predict the details of the re-entry, we can?t predict whether the Phobos LIFE biomodule will survive re-entry, and certainly we can't predict whether it will land somewhere it could be recovered," said the Planetary Society?s Bruce Betts, LIFE project manager.

"In the unlikely event the Phobos LIFE biomodule is recovered, we would want to study the organisms inside," Betts told SPACE.com. "Though the primary goal of 34 months in deep space will not have been achieved, there would be some scientific value to study the organisms after two months in low-Earth orbit."
