Troy Roness: Labels Bite: Feeding Your Recovery, Relationships, and Others' Education
Since my "coming out" piece in February, I have received, for the most part, positive feedback. However, the topic of how my sexuality and my recovery from an eating disorder might tie together continues to be a troublesome one to bring up without eliciting anger and frustration from one party or another. Well, sometimes a person needs to make waves in order for change to begin.
I've known from my earliest memories that I want to please those around me. With family and friends I tried desperately to fit in through sports, academics, etc., and it eventually led to self-destruction through my eating disorder. I'm now finding that even after being true about my sexual orientation, this same perfectionism is still affecting my relationships, just in a different way: I now want to prove that I'm successful in life through stability and emotional and relationship maturity. Am I forgetting the tools that recovery has taught me in regard to finding a healthy balance between relying on myself and others?
Recovery, therapy, and starting my life all over again has caused a 180-degree turnaround in my ability to understand others and have compassion and empathy for them. It's a miracle that I'm actually alive. Over the course of six months of residential treatment, I never spoke about my sexual orientation, which, for me, was at the core of all the misinterpretation, self-hatred, and poor relationship rapport in my life.
Over time, my eating disorder symptoms were destructive to myself and to my body. That unhealthy set of coping skills and behaviors, in some ways, led to self-brainwashing, allowing me to feel that I deserved punishment because of my failures to tackle the world alone, deal with my emotions, and change my sexuality. I didn't deserve anything better, to be happy, or to feel good about myself.
One aspect of recovery deals with assessing how one's interactions with family and friends might need to be approached differently. Unresolved issues are almost always evident in any addiction, and such is the case with eating disorders: typically, individuals just haven't dealt with a certain issue (or issues) when they are struggling with the disorder.
I want to dedicate part of this entry to emotional relationships, whether platonic or not, and how certain myths regarding relationships are based merely on a lack of maturity, or on a general understanding of what it means to seek out a healthy connection. At 25, I sense that instead of wanting to be perfect in every way possible, I now want to prove that I can be successful in my "chosen lifestyle," or in a relationship that society falsely claims will never work or ever have meaning (sigh... calling it a "chosen lifestyle" or a "relationship that will never last" is a meaningless, pointless, and stupid generalization).
I believe that each person's story, despite their similarities, makes him or her unique, and I don't endorse labels or generalizations in any sense, whether it's being called a "faggot," "homo," or "pussy," or being called a "bigot," "racist," "liberal," or "Bible thumper." To be honest, we've all been at the receiving end of each, in one way or another, and all without reason or cause. It's interesting how we throw these terms around without a thought as to who that person may be at his or her core. Those labels shouldn't force a person to justify an opinion they hold, either. Everyone on this Earth, including me, is entitled to their opinion, within the bounds of good sense, without having to explain themselves.
Here's an example: I could easily defend Rick Santorum for the recent engagement with "extremist" Pastor Dennis Terry. Why? Pastor Terry merely introduced him and, to my knowledge, nothing else. Alternatively, I could label him and say, "Well, he is being endorsed by an individual who believes the LGBT community is wrong." The same goes for President Obama and Rev. Wright, who also has had conflicting messages concerning LGBT issues in his years as a church leader. Is the president a bigot or hateful to other races? And Senator John McCain and his supposed connection with John Hagee? Each is an example of how generalizations and labels go too far before we truly know the full story.
Now, let's talk Kirk Cameron. His views have infuriated many; however, I cannot fathom a less confrontational way of expressing an opinion or belief than he did during his interview. Unlike many vocal anti-LGBT pundits out there, he's never said he'd abandon his child or publicly scorn an individual. I may not agree with everything the guy has on his mind, but it doesn't make him a bigot. Lists and examples like these go on and on.
Some may say these comparisons are apples and oranges, but you get where my point lies. By projecting one-dimensional definitions onto those we either fear or don't understand, we harm ourselves and others. Issues such as dissociation, sadness, anxiety, and anger can manifest if a productive approach isn't administered. The fact is, no pair listed above "approves" of me or the LGBT "lifestyle," but that's where we can end the "blame game" and begin educating. We must find balance in our own beliefs. We must stand up, be a voice, not a martyr, and be educational, not confrontational. After all, if we throw generalizations around, aren't we merely engaging in one thing: demonizing other human beings for beliefs that differ from our own? Aren't differences what foster the change and growth we seek?
Despite the significant strides in making life better for youth who identify as LGBT or those who have emotional struggles, that group still grows up believing that what they want or are is disgusting and not "normal." When someone represses feelings over time, perhaps for a period of years, and are then finally able to have a relationship later in life, might they experience a need to seek emotional strain to fill places that were empty for so long? I've learned from personal experience, education, and therapy that those who grow up in troubled environments often seek unrest in different areas in their life, relationships, and behaviors (through alcoholism, drugs, addictions, etc).
I've never been in love, but I've definitely come close. During that relationship, I actually believed I "lost" the focus on my eating disorder for a time and thought I'd never felt better. That individual cared about me for me and understood where I came from, and the superficial didn't matter anymore. Looking back on that time is actually is a bit humorous. I fell hard, fast, and flat on my face, and it left an incredible scar, one that will remain for life, continuing to make me ponder "what if," but it makes me smile despite the outcome. I know this experience will teach me things for years to come. For example, I know that although I believed I "lost" my focus on my illness, the disorder wasn't gone, and someone else wasn't going to be my cure; if anything, that person was my crutch. It taught me that I had a long way to go in finding balance on my own.
In my opinion, much of society erroneously equates the LGBT community with being promiscuous, moving too quickly, and not knowing what the borders are between "exclusive" and "non-exclusive." Heck, it's only a matter of time before I read that we grow tails, too!
For the media, the "shock-and-awe" effect of negative headlines regarding the LGBT community is what turns heads and garners attention. Stories of breakups, disasters, and doom are highlighted, but rarely stories of hope, survival, and positive relationships.
Well, whether you acknowledge the existence of those of us in the LGBT community who seek fulfilling relationships just as anyone else does, we are around (and we are the majority). I've been laughed at before, either because I don't move fast enough in relationships, or because being Christian and gay supposedly doesn't make sense, or because I'm not "good enough" for someone. Well, I keep my personal life private and don't seek out anything other than what I believe to be a relationship that's meaningful. I seek what's right for me. That's not a generalization or a popular myth; that's a solid commitment to someone else, exclusively, because that's what I know in my heart fits. If that notion means being single (a word that describes a person strong enough to live and enjoy life without depending on others) for a very long time, sign me up!
If you've spent years telling yourself you're a bad person or have taken on the burden of life's challenges and others' generalizations on your own, I know it can be a very difficult shift to give up something that has "helped" you hold things together (e.g., silence, illness, addiction, anger). I know, because I've had to rely on asking others (e.g., Jack, Quinn, Jace) for help in the areas of faith, self-acceptance, and friendship throughout the past two and a half years.
Perhaps your own self-punishment started with bullying and teasing, traumatic experiences, faith struggles, divorce, ostracism, or something else that has added layers of guilt to your conscience. But you must realize that you cannot punish yourself for something you had no control over. You have to love you for you. It's easier said than done, but if you choose to care less about "needing" someone or something, or needing approval, things will slowly turn in your favor.

Activists: Syrian troops storm northwestern town
BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian troops backed by tanks stormed a northwestern town on Saturday in the latest of a series of pushes by regime forces into rebel-held areas, but faced strong resistance from defending army defectors, activists said.
The British-Based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said the troops entered Saraqeb from the north and were advancing amid heavy shelling.
The Observatory said fighting had reached the central market district where army defectors damaged a tank and three armored personnel carriers. It said several members of the military and a civilian were killed, and dozens more people were wounded.
"Large numbers of residents are fleeing the town," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, which has a network of activists inside Syria. "People have been leaving the town for some time but after today's attack the process intensified."
Syria's government has been on the offensive over the past two months and has taken a number of rebel strongholds: the provincial capital and other towns in the northwestern province of Idlib that borders Turkey, the central provinces of Hama and Homs, and the eastern oil-rich region of Deir el-Zour that borders Iraq.
Syria's rebels, who took up arms following the regime's crackdown on protesters, are outgunned by armored units loyal to President Bashar Assad but have opted for hit-and-run raids and ambushes.
The Syrian government cites the rise in such attacks to boost its argument that the uprising is being carried out by terrorist groups acting out a foreign conspiracy.
The LCC said the troops were accompanied by pro-government gunmen known as shabiha and plainclothes security agents who arrived in buses and started conducting raids and detaining people. Calls to the town could not get through. The government is known to cut networks in areas where operations are underway.
Saraqeb, in the northern province of Idlib, had been held by army defectors for months.
The attack came 11 days after troops retook Idlib city, the provincial capital, which had also been under rebel control for months.
The Observatory said Syrian security forces killed 10 people throughout Syria Saturday while the LCC put the death toll at 15.
International condemnation and high-level diplomacy have failed to stop the year-old Syria crisis that the U.N. says has killed more than 8,000 people, many of them civilian protesters.
Earlier this week, a U.N. Security Council statement called for a cease-fire to allow for dialogue between all sides on a political solution. Assad's government played down the statement, saying Damascus is under no threats or ultimatums.
Earlier Saturday, the Observatory and the LCC said troops fired mortar rounds at the rebel-held neighborhood of Khaldiyeh in the central city of Homs in apparent preparation to storm the area.
Abdul-Rahman said the heavily-populated Khaldiyeh has been shelled since early Saturday. The LCC posted a video on its Facebook page showing smoke billowing from a residential area it said was in Khaldiyeh.
The neighborhoods, one of Homs' largest, has been under rebel control for months.
Homs has seen some of the heaviest fighting in Syria's year-long uprising. Government forces crushed a rebel stronghold in Baba Amr neighborhood on March 1.
The Observatory said troops also barraged the town of Qalaat al-Madiq in Hama province with mortars and heavy machine guns. The government has been trying to enter the town for the past two weeks, it said.

THE TRAGIC death of a hardhat who was demolishing a building owned by Columbia University came after the school and its contractors racked up a slew of safety complaints, the Daily News has found.
The Ivy League institution has been hit with 59 code violations and has been forced to shut down work 13 times since launching its controversial campus expansion two years ago, building records show.
The complaints were spread across the 64 properties located on the 17-acre site, which runs from 125th to 133rd Sts., and between 12th Ave. and Broadway.
Workers were flagged for everything from improperly removing fire sprinklers to blocking fire exits and failing to shore up listing walls, the records show.
In fact, as city inspectors picked through the ruins of the warehouse on W. 131st St. where 69-year-old Juan Ruiz was killed Thursday, a tipster warned that a wall on another Columbia-owned building a block away was close to giving way, The News has learned.
Columbia spokeswoman Victoria Benitez declined to discuss the deadly collapse or the prior violations, citing the ongoing Buildings Department probe.
?Their official determination of the facts is an essential step in the process,? she said.
Ruiz ? and the two workers who survived the building collapse ? were employed by Breeze National, a Brooklyn-based outfit that was headed for years by Luchese crime family associate Toby Romano. Breeze officials say his son now runs the company.
City inspectors suspect the collapse was caused when a worker sliced through a support beam.
Breeze, however, said that horizontal beam was spliced to another beam. And it was the bolts connecting the two pieces that failed.
Ruiz was the second worker to die during construction of Columbia?s new $6.4 billion campus.
Jozef Wilk, a 51-year-old Polish immigrant who also worked for Breeze, fell to his death while demolishing another Columbia-owned building on Broadway.
King Range, 60, and Sakim Kirby, 30, the two workers who survived the collapse that killed Ruiz, were both in stable condition at St. Luke?s Hospital.
Kirby?s dad said his son is in a lot of pain.
?It?s surreal,? he said. ?I want to know what happened and who is responsible for what happened to my son.?

Stillwater is honored for support to troops
No city in the nation does a better job than Stillwater of helping soldiers reintegrate into civilian life when they return from combat or helping their families when they are away.
The city has been awarded the 2011 Sea of Goodwill Award by Homeward Deployed, a Washington-based organization that recognizes communities for their efforts in supporting service members, veterans and those who serve in reserve units.
Representatives from Homeland Deployed made the presentation Thursday during a ceremony at the Washington County Historic Courthouse in Stillwater.
Stillwater was the national winner in the category for communities with between 10,000 and 99,999 people.
Hugo also was recognized Thursday as the honorable mention in the same category.
"We think it's time to recognize the extraordinary support local communities offer to veterans and their families around the country," said Gretchen Martens, Homeward Deployed's chief executive officer. "Their efforts in supporting service members, veterans and their families are greatly appreciated."
Stillwater and Hugo are Yellow Ribbon communities and involved in efforts to help families affected by deployment, said Mike Polehna, of the Washington County Parks Department, who is active in the yellow ribbon campaign.
In the past two years, volunteers have organized a pheasant hunt for returning soldiers and arranged for services such as plumbing and snow plowing.
"This is a celebration and thank you for all the people working to support the troops," he said.

The U.S. spent $2.6 trillion on health care in 2010 ? more than the entire economy of France or Britain. But the amount spent and how it's used varies from state to state.
And, at the opposite ends of the spectrum:?Texas and Massachusetts. At 25 percent, Texas has the highest rate of uninsured people in the nation. Massachusetts, where a 2006 law made coverage mandatory, has the lowest rate ? less than 2 percent of people are uninsured. Here's a look at two Americans who are living the reality of that difference:
Walking A Health Care 'Tightrope'
For six million uninsured Texans, having health problems?can mean an anxious scramble for care at overcrowded charity clinics or the local emergency room. Melinda Maarouf knows that experience all too well. She's a teacher's aide at the Faith Christian Academy, a private school just outside of Houston.
"Unfortunately, we're a small school and the budget doesn't allow for insurance for the employees," she says.
Maarouf is divorced and has a daughter in college. The school where Maarouf works can't afford to bring her on full time right now, so she makes just over $11,000 a year. That income puts her right around the federal poverty line, and it makes for some hard health choices.

She has high blood pressure, and has skipped pills to make her prescriptions last longer. "I can always tell when the blood pressure's elevated," she says. "I feel uncomfortable. I feel edgy and kind of shaky, and my ears ring."
Maarouf knows that if she doesn't keep her blood pressure under control, she could have a stroke, heart attack or kidney damage. She recently found help at a charity clinic where she pays only $25 per visit. Even so, Maarouf says the blood pressure is all she can afford to treat right now.
"I haven't had a Pap smear ? goodness, I couldn't even tell you ? probably since my daughter was born, and she's 26," she says. "I haven't had a well-woman exam. And I'm sure it's time for some routine blood work."
Maarouf has never had a mammogram and she's continued to push off some needed dental work ? but medical bills scare her. In 2010, she went to the emergency room with chest pain. Doctors didn't find anything wrong, but she ended up with $3,000 in bills.
Maarouf couldn't keep up with the payment plan, so she simply shoved the bills into the bottom of a drawer and swallowed her anxiety.
"Oh, my credit's pretty much shot, as far as that goes. But there's not much I can do about it," she says. "You just have to move on, do what you have to do to survive."
Like millions of other working Texans without minor children, Maarouf can't get Medicaid. And she's years away from Medicare.
Hospitals in Texas spend over $4 billion a year treating uninsured patients like Maarouf. Some of the cost gets absorbed by county taxpayers, and some gets shifted onto insured Texans, who pay higher premiums for their own coverage.
Maarouf says she feels stuck and exposed. "It's like you're sort of walking a tightrope. I sometimes feel like I'm on the edge of a cliff. As long as everything is status quo and there's no glitches or bumps in the road, I feel OK," she says. "But I sometimes feel like I'm one emergency room visit away from a catastrophe."
In Massachusetts, Relief For The Uninsured
Five years before Massachusetts started offering free and subsidized coverage, Peter Brook couldn't afford health insurance or the daily insulin and needles he needs to treat his diabetes. Things have changed for Brook since the Massachusetts health care law, the same one that helped shape the federal Affordable Care Act.
"When I didn't have health insurance, I'd use a needle for 30 days, like 150 shots or something, so it gets a little bit dull," says Brook, who does odd jobs like landscaping to cover his basic needs.
When he had health complications related to his diabetes, he didn't have money for care. The worst was a digestion problem that would bring on crippling stomach pain.
"I would tend to hole up in a fetal position at home, and then over the course of week or two, my skinny body would lose 25 to 30 pounds and then I'd end up looking like a death camp survivor," he says.

And then there was the time Brook fractured his?pinky and set it by taping the broken section to his ring finger. The pinky is still crooked, but today Brook has free health insurance and a regular doctor at the South Boston Community Health Center. His only expense is a $3.65 co-pay for prescriptions, which adds up to about $14 a month.
"I now have good health care, so that is a weight off of my mind," he says. "It's been a year and half since I've been in a hospital, and for the first 50 years of my life I never went six months without an inpatient hospital stay for one thing or another."
Brook's care is free, but Massachusetts ? with help from the federal government ? spends roughly $182 million more every year on health coverage for low-income residents than it did before 2006, according to the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. And Brook worries about those costs.
"Who's paying for it? Where's that money coming from?" he asks. "If society were a human being, then they're dragging a ball and chain down the street on their ankle."
Brook has joined the?Greater Boston Interfaith Organization in lobbying Massachusetts legislators to control health care cost increases so that coverage will be affordable. And as lawmakers finalize bills, there's a vigorous debate underway about what state government can or should do to about limiting spending.

Proposed Bill Would Prevent Foreclosures with Faster Short Sales ...

This is good news for real estate investors. Last month, three Senators (Murkowski, Scott Brown and Sherrod Brown) together proposed a bill called the ?Prompt Notification of Short Sale Act,? which, in essence, is designed to speed up the short sale process.
It would require ?a written response from a lender no later than 75 days after receipt of the written request from the buyer,? In turn, the response must include one of the following decisions: acceptance or rejection of the offer, a counter-offer, need for extension (only one permitted) with estimation of when a decision would be available. If this process were violated, the buyer would be entitled to $1000 plus reasonable attorney fees.
This bill could be just the thing to help improve the short sale process, which is notoriously long ? generally 6-9 months.

A coalition of education, business and civic groups is calling for a broad overhaul of Colorado?s school finance system, including alignment of financial support with educational outcomes.
The paper released today by the Colorado School Finance Partnership notes that the state?s current system was created in 1994. ?This means that Colorado is still funding its schools according to formulas created a decade before recent reform legislation,? the paper says, citing the Colorado Achievement Plan for Kids, the new accountability system for districts and schools and the educator effectiveness law now being implemented.
The eight-page paper, titled ?Financing Our Future: Assessing Colorado?s School Finance System,? sets out principles and goals for a new finance system but doesn?t provide detailed recommendations for how that system would work, including for how to align funding and outcomes.
The paper recommends the state launch a task force to draft a new school finance law. It also acknowledges that schools need more money. ?It?s clear to everyone at the table that more resources are needed,? said former state Treasurer Cary Kennedy, a partnership co-chair.

The state appeal of the ruling in the Lobato case is pending before the Colorado Supreme Court. A high court ruling upholding Rappaport could set the terms for future debates about school finance.

Equity: The system should include extra funding for students with special challenges and needs, should recognize different costs in different kinds of districts, strengthen regional services for small districts and be based on research. The paper also urges reform of state and local revenue sources and tax structures.
Sufficiency: The new system should provide enough revenue for districts to meet the expectations of recent reform laws, and ?Colorado voters should be asked to support both a tax and revenue structure? to support and sustain the new system.
Many elements of the proposal exist ? albeit often in truncated or underfunded form ? in the state?s current system. For example, the state does provide some funding for preschool and full-day kindergarten, and for dual enrollment. The finance formula includes factors that provide some funding to account for at-risk students and for different costs in different districts.
But those current elements aren?t based on real costs, said Kennedy. That?s why the paper urges the new system be research-based, she said, ?to really reflect the true costs.?
The paper recommends that the state convene a task force ?charged with creating a new School Finance Act, in accordance with the principles and recommendations developed by the School Finance Partnership.?
The partnership also plans to develop an outreach program to present its views to interest groups and the public and to work with other civic groups that are studying Colorado fiscal reform. An expanded version of the eight-page paper is to be released next month.
Chris Watney, CEO of the Colorado Children?s Campaign and a partnership co-chair, said, ?Overhaul of the school finance act is our ultimate goal? and that partnership members are committed to maintaining the paper?s principles in reaching that goal.
Bob Diebel, the third co-chair, said the group is resolved to ?stay together? as the debates over school funding develop.

- The group was organized early last year by the Colorado Children?s Campaign and operated on two levels.
