Garage Door Safety Tips | ej-fransen.com

Keeping Your Garage Door Safe
As a homeowner, keeping your garage door safe should be a a priority, especially when you have kids or pets around the house. Even a standard garage door weighs at least a couple of hundred pounds ? more than enough weight to cause serious injury or death if it happens to fall or close on someone. Fortunately, a garage door is one of the less-complex bits of equipment in an average home and can be expected to last for at least 20 years under normal use. However, the moving parts like the springs and rollers are prone to wearing out over time and can pose a potential safety hazard if not maintained regularly. Bear in mind that while some garage door maintenance can be performed by a homeowner, it is not recommended that you attempt any major repairs ? spring replacements in particular can be extremely hazardous for an untrained professional due to the extreme tension contained in the springs.

  • Inspect the garage door every 3 months. Check all moving parts including springs, cables and rollers for any signs of wear such as cracking, fraying or chipping. Verify that any bolts, screws or other attachments are tightened.
  • Once a month, lubricate all moving parts with a product specifically designed for lubricating garage doors (e.g. WD-40 Garage Door Lubricant). This will help reduce the normal wear-and-tear and prolong the life of the parts.
  • Depending on the type of garage door you have, it may either have a single torsion spring mounted above the garage door or an extension spring mounted on each side of the garage door. If you have extension springs, check that they have a safety cable installed ? this is simply a cable that runs through the middle of the spring. This will help catch any pieces of broken spring in the event a spring breaks. The spring may break apart violently, showering the garage with pieces of debris that could potentially injure someone or damage your property.
  • With the garage door completely closed, trigger the emergency release on your garage door opener. This will disconnect the garage door from the opener so you can open it by hand. Make sure that no one is near the door, then open it by hand. The door should remain open no matter what position it is in, but if it will not stay open or even slams shut, the springs are most likely beginning to wear out and will need to be replaced in order to ensure safe operation of the garage door. The springs are designed to balance the weight of the garage door and make it easy to move.
  • For homeowners with sectional garage doors (where the garage door consists of several sections hinged together) ? do not use the joints between each section as a handle to pull the garage door down. Hundreds of finger injuries occur every year due to this ? the garage door joints close up and can severely pinch fingers. Some garage doors are designed with safety joints to prevent this from happening, but always keep your fingers clear of the joints when closing your garage door by hand.

Keeping Your Garage Door Opener Safe
Along with the garage door, the garage door opener is also a potential safety hazard if not maintained properly. Fortunately, a correctly-operating garage door opener will significantly reduce any risk of injury but always use caution around a moving garage door. Some maintenance can be performed by a homeowner but for any significant issues, we always recommend consulting a qualified professional.

  • For safety in homes with small children, it is always recommended that the garage door opener?s wall switch be placed at least 5 feet off the ground.
  • With the garage door open, activate the garage door opener and place your hand on the bottom edge of the garage door as if trying to keep it open. The door should reverse immediately when it detects an obstruction. If it does not ? check the closing force on the garage door opener.
  • With a roll of paper towels placed in the door opening, try closing the garage door. When the garage door touches the paper towels, it should immediately reverse. Check the closing force on the garage door opener.
  • While the garage door is closing, pass an object across the garage door opening. The invisible beam projected by the safety sensors on either side of the garage door should be broken, causing the garage door to immediately reverse. If it does not, the safety sensors may be dirty ? they can be wiped down with a soft clean cloth to remove any dirt.

Do you have a serious phobia?

I was just wondering if anyone else has any serious phobias. By this, I mean fears that stop you doing things - such as a serious fear of heights would prevent you from going on planes etc.

I have a phobia of the dark, elevators and gas masks. I have to sleep with a nightlight and I NEVER go anywhere dark without some form of a light. My fear of elevators means I always take the stairs. I get panicky when I absolutely HAVE to use an elevator in case it gets stuck and I'm trapped in it. My fear of gas masks (yes, weird, I know) originates from the episode of Doctor Who called 'The Empty Child,' in which there were gas mask zombies. It makes me have nightmares to this day (7 years since the episode), and when I see a gas mask, I start to have panic attacks. Proper attacks. I once froze in fear when I saw one and couldn't move.

ANYWAY, enough about me; what's your serious phobia? What does it stop you doing?

Clowns (Supernatural and IT contributed mostly to this fear), if i see one i freeze on the spot or try to run away, i once saw a clown doll kind of thing at blackpool pleasure beach, i was terrified. We had to walk all the way around the park to get to the ride we wanted to go on which was a 30second walk past the clown.
Horses (don't even know why, i'm just terrified of them)
Heights (i can go on a plane if i don't look out the window, just being able to see how high i am makes me fill ill)

Spiders. It has gotten better over the years, but when I was younger I used to be awful. I would stand frozen if I saw one, have panic attacks, and even if one had been killed I wouldnt go in the room for days. (This was a pain if it was in my room, as Id end up sleeping in my parents room and my Dad would go in my room).

Or id just sit, shaking, crying and screaming for ages!! It was kind of crazy at the same time.

Ive kind of had to deal with it more on my own now, but if theyre even slightly big I wont go near them.

One thing i absolutely hate is when people say ''Im terrified of spiders too!'' and then theyre there picking them up, or leaving them in the same room. Thats not being terrified, thats just disliking them.

and it kind of stopped me doing things- like I wont go camping, I didnt go on a college trip to the amazon because of my phobia. I am currently trying to plan a trip to Australia, but im aware of the huge huntsman spiders they have, and although Im trying to face my phobia now, im finding this difficult to accept!

I also have a spider radar- in that wherever I go, i WILL see a spider.

But I also have a habit of attracting them. There has been at least 3 occasions when i have had spiders on me- 2 of them were the massive black hair house ones :'( ergh wanna cry just remembering that.

I remember lying in my bed in the dark and i felt a tickle on my face, so I looked down and there was a spider walking along my chest, I flicked my hand on it and rushed to put the light on and it was standing on the floor and it was massive, I just stood there frozen before reality hit and i got someone to kill it and started crying lol and a second time, i picked up my pajmas and a house spider dropped out running in my bed, and no one was home, so I went to get the hoover, and just stood hitting the hoover on my bed, because i couldnt find the spider. After about an hour, my parents returned home and my Dad could lift up the covers and get him

    And also sharks and space!

Space as in the galaxy or as in an empty space like outside? I'm guessing the galaxy but i don't know how you can be scared of that :/

    Spiders.

I once cried my eyes out upon seeing one in my front room. and wouldn't go in there until my Dad killed it.

A friend also once threw a spider at me knowing I'm massively arachnophobic and I had a mini panic attack, reduced to tears.

The sight of a spider can get my heart seriously racing, and put me in a complete state. There's those skinny ones in the corner of my shed and I'm "ok" with them, but any other
    spider seriously screws me up.

Spiders like crazy. If I woke up and had one on me, I dread to think what would happen.. It'd probably be health hazardous though.

yeh, i wouldnt say its a bad phobia, but if i think of space (outer space) or see it on TV or in films it scares me a fair bit and i start panicking inside!

Space either scares you or leaves you in awe because of how amazing it is :P I for one love it, I wish i was old enough to apply for the Mars One project

This is so true. My Dad is like this, he considers himself arachnophobic but he's the one picking it up when I was sat there shaking and crying..

im not surprised. Sometimes i dont even tell people im scared of spiders in case they dont realise the extent.

At work once they were winding me up telling me there was a pet spider in the stock room and i ended up crying at the cash desk lol

Lol my dad used to prank me too. Whenever he picks up a spider and had it cupped in his hands he used to put it near me and pretend to throw it. the furthest back I can remember of being petrified is when I was about 7, there was a huge spider at my mum's friend's house and the daughter picked it up and put it RIGHT in front of my face, and this spider was MASSIVE. Just thinking about it over 10 years later makes me feel uneasy haha. Scarred me.

    ****ing spiders..

UPDATE: Eco Animal Health profits as Latin sales surge

Pdf 3:57 am by Natasha Barr

---Adds additional comment and broker comment ---

?

Eco Animal Health () upped its dividend by a quarter last year as strong sales of its ?best in class? livestock antibiotic helped profits surge.

The veterinary drug company increased underlying net profits by 32 per cent to ?2.6 million, from ?2 million, in the year to March, while earnings per share rose to 4.19 pence from 2.96 pence.

The improvement was underpinned by sales of lead product Aivlosin in Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela.

The group?s fortunes were further boosted after the year-end by US approval for Aivlosin - a water soluble antibiotic for pigs.

The drug, which works much more quickly than existing older products and so is more profitable for farmers to use, currently accounts for 65 per cent of revenue.

Cenkos analyst Ian Berry said as the US and Canada are approximately a third of the addressable market, the approval represents a ?massive opportunity? for the group. ?

Financially, this boost isn?t likely to start showing on the group?s figures until next year as it will need a little time for the product to build momentum.

Eco expects to start making sales in the last quarter of this financial year.

Berry added: ?Once ECO has gained marketing authorisations and begun to sell product in all its major markets it will represent an attractive takeover target for an international pharmaceutical group that would be able to multiply ECO?s profitability several fold through distribution and marketing synergies.?

Chairman Peter Lawrence said: ?We are confident that the long awaited marketing authorisations in the US and Canada will have a major positive effect on the development of ECO, although it will be some months before the product launches gain momentum.?

?ECO is very well placed to further broaden its product ranges and its global reach will ensure that it capitalises on opportunities as they arise in all the company?s major markets.?

The company ended the year with ?9.5 million in net cash and it now plans to up its dividend by 25 per cent to 3.75p.

Lawrence added: ?We feel that we are confident our future is very bright and we want to share that with our shareholders and reflect it in the dividend.?

Cenkos has a ?buy? rating on the stock.

miR-122: Loss of tiny liver molecule might lead to liver cancer

A new study shows that loss of a small RNA molecule in liver cells might cause liver cancer and that restoring the molecule might slow tumor growth and offer a new way to treat the disease.

The animal study was led by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center ? Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC ? James).

The scientists examined what happens when liver cells lack a molecule called microRNA-122 (miR-122). They found that when the molecule is missing, the liver develops fat deposits, inflammation and tumors that resemble hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer.

When the researchers artificially restored miR-122 to nearly normal levels by delivering the miR-122 gene into liver cells, it dramatically reduced the size and number of tumors, with tumors making up 8 percent on average of liver surface area in treated animals versus 40 percent in control animals.

The study is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

"These findings reveal that miR-122 has a critical tumor-suppressor role in the healthy liver, and they highlight the possible therapeutic value of miR-122 replacement for some patients with liver cancer," says study leader Dr. Kalpana Ghoshal, associate professor of pathology and a member of the OSUCCC ? James Experimental Therapeutics Program.

More than 28,700 new cases of HCC are expected in the United States in 2012, and 20,550 Americans are expected to die of the malignancy. Major risk factors for HCC include hepatitis B and C virus infection and liver damage due to alcohol use. HCC is curable if caught early, but most cases are diagnosed at a late, incurable stage.

MiR-122 is found mainly in liver cells ? it is the most abundant microRNA in those cells ? and it plays a major role in regulating cholesterol in the body. This microRNA is lost in some people with HCC, however, resulting in a poor prognosis.

For this study, Ghoshal and her colleagues developed a strain of mice that lacks miR-122 and develops HCC through the progression of events that begins with fatty liver deposits followed by inflammation and liver cancer.

The researchers then used a second strain of mice that spontaneously develops liver cancer due to overexpression of a cancer-causing gene called MYC (pronounced "mick"). The researchers delivered miR-122 into the animals' livers during tumor development. Three weeks later, those treated with the molecule had smaller and fewer tumors.

"The model we developed for these studies will not only facilitate our understanding of liver biology, but it will also be good for testing therapeutic efficacy of newly developed drugs against liver disease, including HCC," Ghoshal says.

Ghoshal also notes that research by others has shown that hepatitis C virus requires miR-122 for replication. "Because our findings demonstrate what happens when miR-122 is lost in liver cells, they might help improve the safety of new drugs that treat hepatitis C virus infection by blocking miR-122," she says.

More information: MicroRNA-122 plays a critical role in liver homeostasis and hepatocarcinogenesis, Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Apple, Samsung CEOs once again fail to reach pre-trial agreement on patents

Apple, Samsung CEOs once again fail to reach pre-trial agreement on patents

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung's Vice Chairman Choi Gee-sung and mobile chief Shin Jong-Kyun have once again reportedly failed to come to an agreement on their now long-standing patent dispute during a second round of court-mandated settlement talks. Citing several sources familiar with the talks, Dan Levine and Poornima Gupta, writing for Reuters said:

Apple believes [FRAND] patents should be valued lower due to those dynamics, one of the sources said. Additionally, Samsung believes it has a stronger patent portfolio than Apple when it comes to next-generation technology like 4G, the source said.

FRAND patents are supposed to be licensed under "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminate" terms in exchange for their being adopted as essential standards in a technology. Apple chooses to keep their patents proprietary and not license them, rather than to have them become part of a standard. Some courts and government regulators have taken issue with FRAND patents being used to sue or counter-sue against non-FRAND patents and, in the EU, ant-trust investigations have begun looking into them.

This was at least the second court-mediated settlement talk to fail. While Apple and Samsung continue to sue each other over patents, and whether or not Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad, or Apple violated core Samsung technologies, Apple remains Samsung's largest customer, sourcing numerous components from Samsung's manufacturing division.

If Apple and Samsung can't reach an agreement, the case will go to court and then it'll be out of their hands. Since courts have varied widely in patent decisions of late, from tosses cases out of court to issuing injunctions, what happens next will be hard to predict. Except for the amount of time and money spent by all parties involved.

I'm still calling for Judge Judy to step in and settle everything in 30 min of snark.

Axel Merk on Inflation, Currencies and the Likelihood of a Greater ...

by Anthony Wile, The Daily Bell:

The Daily Bell is pleased to present this exclusive interview with Axel Merk (left).

Introduction: Axel Merk, President & CIO of Merk Investments, LLC, is an expert on the global economy, hard money, macro trends and international investing. He is considered the authority on currencies and has been named the ?Currency Guru? by Morningstar. His insight and expertise have allowed him to foresee major economic developments: As early as 2003, he pinpointed the macro trend of US dollar volatility while warning about the building of the credit bubble. In 2005, Axel Merk positioned his clients to move out of real estate and protect them against a faltering U.S. dollar by investing in hard currencies and gold. In early 2007, he wisely cautioned that volatility would surge, causing a painful global credit contraction affecting all asset classes. He is a regular guest on CNBC, FoxBusiness, Bloomberg TV and frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Barron?s and other financial publications around the world.

Daily Bell:?Tell us about Merk Funds. How much does it manage and in what capacities?

Axel Merk: Merk Funds manages over $600 million in four mutual funds; we invest in four currencies, international fixed income securities and gold. We try to give investors managed currency risk in a variety of forms, seeking to profit from a rise in currencies. One of our products is what we call non-directional, which is more tactical in nature.

Daily Bell: As early as 2003 you identified the building of the credit bubble. How was that possible? You use Austrian economics?

Novel anti-malarial drug target identified

Friday, July 20, 2012

An international team of scientists, led by researchers from the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, have identified the first reported inhibitors of a key enzyme involved in survival of the parasite responsible for malaria. Their findings, which may provide the basis for anti-malarial drug development, are currently published in the online version of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Tropical malaria is responsible for more than 1.2 million deaths annually. Severe forms of the disease are mainly caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, transmitted to humans by female Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria eradication has not been possible due to the lack of vaccines and the parasite's ability to develop resistance to most drugs.

The researchers conducted high-throughput screening of nearly 350,000 compounds in the National Institutes of Health's Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository (MLSMR) to identify compounds that inhibit an enzyme which plays an important role in parasite development: Plasmodium falciparum glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (PfG6PD) is essential for proliferating and propagating P. falciparum.

"The enzyme G6PD catalyzes an initial step in a process that protects the malaria parasite from oxidative stress in red blood cells, creating an environment in which the parasite survives," said senior author Lars Bode, PhD, assistant professor in the UCSD Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology and the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. People with a natural deficiency in this enzyme are protected from malaria and its deadly symptoms, an observation that triggered the reported research.

The parasitic form of the enzyme (PfG6PD) is what contributes the majority of G6PD activity in infected red blood cells. Because the parasite lives in the blood of a malaria-infected person, the scientists aimed at identifying compounds that inhibit the parasitic form but not the human form of the enzyme. "We didn't want to interfere with the human form of the enzyme and risk potential side effects," Bode explained.

Scientific testing had previously been limited by a lack of recombinant PfG6PD. Team members in the lab of Katja Becker, PhD, at the Interdisciplinary Research Center at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany produced the first complete and functional recombinant PfG6PD, and researchers led by Anthony Pinkerton, PhD, at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute used it to identify the lead compound resulting from their efforts, ML276.

ML276 represents the first reported selective PfG6PD inhibitor, which stops the growth of malaria parasites in cultured red blood cells ? even those parasites that developed resistance to currently available drugs. "ML276 is a very promising basis for future drug design of new anti-malarial therapeutics," said Bode.

Peaceful Table: Vegan Milk Crumbs

Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar created something called Milk Crumbs, which?she adds?to?some of?her famous, non-vegan dessert recipes.? Her Milk Crumbs are made with nonfat cow- milk?powder.?Now, with Vegan Milk Crumbs, we?can make Tosi's?basic recipes without killing?anyone.? You see, when we drink cows' milk,?we flood our bodies with the natural pregnancy hormones of?suffering, innocent?beings.? And we?also personally create a system where cows are forcibly impregnated their entire lives so they will lactate to "give" us milk.? And all the male baby cows born from these pregnancies are chained for their short lives, and then literally dragged to slaughter because they cannot walk.? And they are never allowed one drop of their own mothers' milk.? So, if we're drinking cow's milk and eating cheese, we might?as well be eating veal.? And all this is aside from the foreign, heart-stopping cholesterol we take in.? We don't drink horse milk, and we are the only species who will drink the milk of another animal.? And did you know that drinking cow milk actually thins bones?? It's true and you can find many?studies that show it.? When we have the Meat and Dairy councils funding the American Food Pyramid and financing medical schools, it's no wonder we have been duped for generations.

Michael Ardan: What Happened When I Hit On a Hot Guy... And Not on Grindr

I have never had a Grindr account. I have never answered a Craigslist personal ad (though I have found myself perusing the Missed Connections, just in case Anderson Cooper saw me on the N train and was too shy to say something. Don't be shy, Andy.). I have never logged onto Manhunt, or Adam4Adam, or any other such site. Please don't get me wrong, I don't judge anyone for their choices concerning their own personal relationships, phsical or otherwise, but I can't even get into the idea of Internet dating, let alone Internet sexing. To me, there is something oddly cold about the impersonality of the ever-increasing use of technology in dating/hookup culture. And perhaps that's the point; there is certainly an entire subculture of people -- gay and straight, men and women -- who are attracted to (or at least turned on by) the increased ease of casual sexual encounters. To me it just seems lazy. We can now quite literally use our iPhones and Blackberries to order in everything from dinner to drinks to hookups. Surely there is still something to be said for traditional methods.

I was thinking about this one recent evening after a particularly messy breakup, as I found myself drinking alone on a Tuesday night at the Cubby Hole, a cool little neighborhood bar in the West Village known for its super-strong $2 margaritas. After having a few drinks and chatting up a friendly lesbian named Carol who was sitting next to me at the bar, I glanced up just in time to lock eyes with a highly attractive guy ordering a drink a few feet away. I was probably staring for just a little too long, but he just smiled, took his drink -- a rum and coke -- and walked back toward his group of friends.

Now, if life were a romantic comedy, this would have been the part normally known as the "meet-cute." You know, the scene where Reese Witherspoon/Kate Hudson/Jennifer Aniston (or, if you're feeling nostalgic, Meg Ryan/Julia Roberts/Diane Keaton) has the slightly-awkward-in- an-endearing-way chance meeting with [insert hunky actor here], and everyone watching at home just knows they're going to end up together in the end. Unfortunately, most of our lives are not Hollywood rom-coms, and instead we find ourselves thrown into the dating world without a script or an audience rooting for us from their sofas.

The way I see it, we have a couple of options. We can either sit passively and wait for the right person to approach us, eventually realize it's not going to happen, and duck into a corner to sign onto to Grindr (not the greatest strategy), or we can take charge and be willing to "put ourselves out there," so to speak. It's a scary thing, definitely, to open yourself up to the possibility of being shot down, especially in a crowded bar. But as with everything in life, anything worth having is worth working for. It just so happened that on this particular night I was newly single and had built up a respectable buzz, so naturally I was feeling a little bold. I politely excused myself to my new friend Carol and made my way over to Mr. Rum and Coke.

At this point I should probably mention that meeting people in New York isn't exactly hard; they're all over the place. Meeting normal people is another story. Maybe it's all the rushing around; all those people constantly moving can make anyone a little neurotic. Or maybe it's the absolute ridiculousness of having 8 million people all cramped together. Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure: Whether you're gay or straight, meeting nice, dateable people in New York is no walk in the proverbial park (Central or Gramercy. Rimshot.). So sometimes you just have to be willing to take a chance, and I definitely had a good feeling about this guy. And as I approached, he noticed me coming and shot me another adorable smile.

"Rum and coke, right?" I asked, pointing at his drink. "How's the rum here?" (Sidenote: When you put yourself out there, sometimes you will say completely stupid things like, "How's the rum here?" Chalk it up to a learning experience and move on.)

"Not bad. I saw you at the bar. Are you here with friends?" he asked.

"Yeah," I said, motioning my glass towards Carol, who was now deep in conversation with some girl who had taken my seat.

And so it began. Fifteen minutes later we had both ordered a fresh drink and were deep in conversation. I'd learned that his name was James and that he, like me, had grown up in the South and liked puppies. Things in common!

"So what's your story?" James asked during a brief lull in the conversation. "Are you single?" This guy was moving fast. And I kind of liked it. Not to get all Sex and the City, but that's the thing about putting yourself out there. Sometimes it's totally life-in-the-fast-lane.

"Yeah," I said, leaving it at that. I briefly considered telling him the whole story of my breakup and my evening drinking cheap margaritas by myself, but fortunately I wasn't quite drunk enough to lay all that crazy out on the table.

As we were finishing our drinks, James' phone started buzzing. "It's my friends," he said, checking the screen. "They're outside waiting for me. Listen, I have to run. But if you get bored here, you should call me and come meet up." And then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a business card. I kid you not.

"OK," I said, taking his card. His card. Classy.

And with that, he flashed yet another cute smile and walked off.

I stood there for a moment, a little unsure of what exactly had just happened, but feeling pretty good about myself nonetheless. Had an attractive, seemingly normal guy just given me his number? I looked down at the card. Ten perfectly printed digits, followed by a name: James. No last name, just James. And then, under that, typed in bold font, two more words: Male Escort. And his rates.

Now, if life were a John Hughes film (and if I was Molly Ringwald circa 1986), this would be the part where I covered my face with my fashionable, homemade handbag and hurried to the bathroom before anyone noticed my face flushed with embarrassment. But I didn't. Despite the outcome, I felt pretty OK.

In this crazy world where impersonal tools like Grindr and (God forbid) Craigslist all too often replace real, human connections, I had swallowed my pride and hit on a hot stranger, which had given me the confidence to do it all over again next time, and I hadn't even so much as glanced at my Blackberry. That, to me, is a victory in itself. This is how meeting people is supposed to go. We stumble along the way, we end up with a few crazy stories, and eventually we get back up and do it all over again until the odds finally tip in our favor. It's all about the journey. Think about that the next time you find yourself tempted to give in to the ease and accessibility of handing over your sex life to an app.

Just be aware that "putting yourself out there" also means opening yourself up to the possibility of rejection and/or rentboys.

Gustav Klimt: Why some say 'The Kiss' is better than the 'Mona Lisa'

'The Kiss' by Gustav Klimt?? the painting shown in Saturday's Google Doodle ? may not be as recognizable as the 'Mona Lisa.' But the golden painting may be better.

By Chris Gaylord / July 14, 2012

Gustav Klimt painted "The Kiss" from 1907 to 1908. But this is the Google Doodle honoring Klimt and his work. (Check out an image of the original below.)

Google

When Google decided to honor painter?Gustav Klimt with a Google Doodle, choosing the right image probably didn't take too long.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The company mostly likely wanted to show something from his "Golden Period," a time when Klimt lavished his work with gold leaf. The team couldn't pick one of his many nude images (many in the early 1900s described his work as "pornography"). Plus, the Google Doodle crew probably wanted to display his best work, like, say, a painting that some believe to be better than the "Mona Lisa."

So, the search engine replaced its regular logo with an homage to Klimt's "The Kiss."?

The painting shows a couple embracing. While we see their faces, most of their bodies hide behind gilded ropes. Gold douses the background, too, creating a glimmering fog around the pair ? as if, in this moment, they were the only things left in this world.?

What about "The Kiss" makes it so?special??The golden painting is certainly less?recognizable?than the "Mona Lisa," a painting that is a top contender for the world's most famous piece of art. Critics praise the "Mona Lisa" for its?technique,?atmosphere, composition, and?mysterious smile.

That said, the Mona Lisa might be better experienced in a book than in real life. The actual painting is rather small ? and appears smaller still considering the crowd that always surrounds it. If you want to examine the brushstrokes and?appreciate?the artistry, you'd best look for a print.

"Unlike the Mona Lisa, which disappoints when you confront it...?'The Kiss' by Gustav Klimt surpasses expectations," writes?journalist Adrian Brijbassi. "For one thing, it?s not nearly as celebrated a painting, so public fascination isn?t high to begin with. More importantly, though, it does what a great piece of art is supposed to do: Hold your gaze, make you admire its aesthetic qualities while trying to discern what?s beyond its superficial aspects."

Canadian artist?Charles Moffat backs up this first impression. He says that "The Kiss" is "widely considered to be the greatest painting ever, better than even the Mona Lisa."?

Klimt never kept a journal and rarely wrote about his own work. Because of this, people need to?interpret?the work for themselves. Alfred Weidinger, curator of the Belvedere Palace Museum in Vienna, Austria, where "The Kiss" resides, imagines that the scene shows two lovers sitting beside a lake. The early morning light shines on the water, creating the golden gleam that dominates the painting.

The ropes signify the love between the couple. It's hard to tell where one person stops and the other?begins. In this moment, they are one.

Just as the "Mona Lisa" has an enigmatic smile, "The Kiss" has its own curious expression. It's hard to tell if the woman welcomes the embrace. She almost seems asleep, perhaps dreaming of a perfect love and a golden wardrobe.

"The Kiss" also mixes together a very modern style with aspects of older art, such as myths (the floral crown atop the man),?religious?artwork (particularly Christian icons), and the more?contemporary?Arts and Crafts movement.?

Not everyone agrees on the importance of this painting, nor of Klimt's legacy. He is undeniably popular ? in 2006, Klimt's portrait "Adele Bloch-Bauer I" sold for $135 million, the highest price ever reported on a painting. (Last year, a piece by Paul Cezanne broke the record with a $250 million bid.) But popularity doesn't mean that you influence other artists. ?

"Klimt, of course, is an important artist ? he's a very?popular?artist ? but in terms of the history of art, he's a very unimportant artist," said writer Frank Whitford in a BBC special about "The Kiss," according to a transcript.?"Although he sums up so much in his work, about the society in which he found himself ? in art historical terms his effect was negligible. So he's an artist really in a cul-de-sac."

What do you think about "The Kiss"? How do you?interpret?the scene? Let us know in the comments below.

Panel calls for annual PTSD screening

The Institute of Medicine recommended Friday that soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan undergo annual screening for post-traumatic stress disorder and that federal agencies conduct more research to determine how well the various treatments for PTSD are working.

Of the 2.6 million service members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, it's estimated that 13 percent to 20 percent have symptoms of PTSD.

Federal agencies have increasingly dedicated more resources to screen and treat soldiers, but considerable gaps remain, according to the Institute of Medicine, an independent group of experts that advises the federal government on medical issues. Its recommendations often make their way into laws drafted by Congress and policies implemented by federal agencies.

Barely more than half of those diagnosed with PTSD actually get treatment, often because many soldiers worry it could jeopardize their careers. Also, when soldiers do get care, they're not tracked to determine which treatments are successful in the long-term.

The Department of Defense provides medical care to active members of the military and the Department of Veterans Affairs cares for those who no longer serve. Sandro Galea, the chairman of the IOM panel, said both departments offer many programs for PTSD.

"But treatment isn't reaching everyone who needs it, and the departments aren't tracking which treatments are being used or evaluating how well they work in the long term," said Galea, a professor and chair of the epidemiology department at Columbia University. "In addition, DOD has no information on the effectiveness of its programs to prevent PTSD."

The report concludes only the first phase of the Institute of Medicine study. The panel is hoping to release a second report in 2014 that will provide more specifics about the number of service members and vets who have PTSD and the outcomes and costs of their treatments.

Nick Colgin, who served for 15 months in Afghanistan as a combat medic, suffered a traumatic brain injury after a rocket-propelled grenade slammed into his Humvee. While he showed symptoms of PTSD upon his return to civilian life, he waited to get treatment until just last month.

"I just didn't want anyone to know I had that issue. I didn't want to know myself," said Colgin, 27, now living in New York City and working with the advocacy group Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Jason Hansman, the group's membership director, said the stigma of seeking treatment is even more prevalent among those on active-duty.

"A lot of people believe their career will end if they seek treatment," Hansman said.

In a recent speech to mental health provides, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said commanding officers must make it understood that seeking help for the stresses of war should be seen as a sign of strength rather than as a sign of weakness.

PTSD is triggered by a specific traumatic event, such as being in combat or witnessing death. The symptoms of the illness include a numbing of emotions, difficulty concentrating and exaggerated startled responses to events.

The institute recommended therapies supported by robust evidence, such as working with patients to change their thinking and emotional responses to stress. But the committee's analysis of other innovative treatments, including yoga, acupuncture and animal-assisted therapy, is hampered by a lack of evidence on their effectiveness.

Galea said that the two departments have been under quite a bit of pressure to get programs up and running to deal with the growing number of vets with PTSD.

"There hasn't been as much premium placed on tracking than there has been on implementing treatment," Galea said.

The panel praised the two departments for issuing joint guidelines for managing PTSD, but it's unknown whether their providers adhere to the guidelines. The panel said that primary care doctors within the VA screen Iraq and Afghanistan veterans annually for symptoms of PTSD, and it recommends that the Defense Department do the same.

The panel said it is hopeful that the departments will make more use of therapy through videoconferences that will allow patients in remote locations to get care.

The panel also called for more research to shed light on the brain's defense mechanisms for stress, identify factors that can influence the timing and severity of symptoms and identify signs that could help lead to earlier diagnosis and more precise drug treatments.

The report said that the VA treated more than 438,000 veterans for PTSD in 2010, showing evidence of the widespread scope of the problem. Similar numbers are not available for the Defense Department.

Cynthia O. Smith, a DOD spokeswoman, said the department has already taken steps to address some of the issues raised in the report.

"The department recognizes the need for continued improvements," Smith said.
