Saudi website editor sentenced to seven years in prison, lashes

DUBAI (Reuters) - The editor of a Saudi Arabian social website has been sentenced to seven years in prison and 600 lashes for founding an Internet forum that violates Islamic values and propagates liberal thought, Saudi media reported on Tuesday.

Raif Badawi, who started the "Free Saudi Liberals" website to discuss the role of religion in Saudi Arabia, has been held since June 2012 on charges of cyber crime and disobeying his father - a crime in the conservative kingdom and top U.S. ally.

Al-Watan newspaper said the judge had also ordered the closure of the website.

France was concerned by the sentence and remained committed to "freedom of opinion and of expression", the foreign ministry said in a statement. Officials from the Saudi National Society for Human Rights could not be reached for comment.

Badawi's website included articles that were critical of senior religious figures such as the Grand Mufti, according to Human Rights Watch.

The watchdog said in December that Badawi faced a possible death sentence after a judge cited him for apostasy, but Al-Watan said the judge dropped the apostasy charges.

Apostasy, the act of changing religious affiliation, carries an automatic death sentence in Saudi Arabia, along with other crimes including blasphemy.

Badawi's wife denied her husband had expressed repentance before the judge on Monday at a court in the Red Sea city of Jeddah. "The judge asked Raif 'Are you a Muslim?' and he said 'Yes, and I don't accept anyone to cast doubt on (my belief)'," she wrote on Twitter.

The world's top oil exporter follows the strict Wahhabi school of Islam and applies Islamic law, or sharia.

Judges base their decisions on their own interpretation of religious law rather than on a written legal code or on precedent.

King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia's ruler, has pushed for reforms to the legal system, including improved training for judges and the introduction of precedent to standardize verdicts and make courts more transparent.

However, Saudi lawyers say that conservatives in the Justice Ministry and the judiciary have resisted implementing many of the changes announced in 2007.

No fatalities after huge Fla. gas plant blasts

TAVARES, Fla. (AP) ? All the workers at a Florida propane gas plant rocked by massive explosions were accounted for early Tuesday morning after officials initially could not account for more than a dozen employees.

John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office said early Tuesday that there were no fatalities despite massive blasts that ripped through the Blue Rhino propane plant late Monday night. Seven people were injured and transported to local hospitals.

"At this point we have no fatalities being reported," he said. "Management is comfortable saying all of those they knew were there tonight have been accounted for."

Herrell earlier had said 15 workers were unaccounted for after the blasts, but all were later found safe. Herrell said several fled the scene, some driving themselves to area hospitals.

The Blue Rhino plant refilled propane tanks typically used for barbecues and other uses.

Herrell said a crew of 24 to 26 people were working at the plant on an overnight shift when the explosions occurred late Monday.

Video footage on WESH-TV in Orlando showed fires burning through trucks used to transport propane tanks, which were parked at the plant. The fire was sending plumes of smoke into the air hours after the blast. Emergency crews could also be seen massing nearby.

Herrell said an evacuation zone was initially a one-mile radius but had been reduced to a half-mile radius. No injuries have been reported from residents in the neighborhood.

Herrell said officials believe the fire is contained and won't spread to another part of the plant but they cannot guarantee that.

Bryan Koon, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, said he was still getting "preliminary information" from local authorities.

The blasts began about 11 p.m.

Herrell said the plant usually has 53,000 20-pound propane tanks.

According to the Leesburg Daily Commercial, the plant was built in 2004 and employs fewer than 50 people.

TransCanada says Keystone XL will create many jobs, despite Obama comments

TransCanada Corp. stands by its forecast that its controversial Keystone XL pipeline project will be a major job creator after U.S. president Barack Obama derided the claim in a weekend interview.

In the session with the New York Times, Mr. Obama said the pipeline project would create no more than 2,000 direct jobs over a two-year construction period, a figure he said was a ?blip? compared to the economy?s need.

More Related to this Story

Mr. Obama also suggested Canada could do more to reduced greenhouse gas emissions that could result from the pipeline, and thereby help win its approval.

In a statement issued late Saturday, TransCanada described the proposed 2,500-kilometre pipeline as the largest infrastructure project waiting to be built in the U.S., with 13,000 construction jobs alone.

?We have dealt with criticism of our job number totals for over two years and we stand by them,? company spokesman James Millar said.

?It?s not logical to think a $7.6-billion infrastructure project stretching across the entire breadth of the continental U.S. wouldn?t employ thousands of workers both in the manufacturing sector and in constructing the pipeline.?

In addition to the promised 13,000 construction jobs, TransCanada said it has over 50 suppliers in places like Ohio, Indiana, Arkansas and Louisiana for steel pipe, valves and motors needed to pump the crude through the line.

In the New York Times interview, Mr. Obama gave no indication whether he would approve the Keystone project, which is championed by governments in Ottawa, Alberta and Saskatchewan as an important link from Canadian oilfields to the massive refining hub on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Environmentalists have made it a cause celebre in the battle against climate change arguing the pipeline will facilitate expansion of oil sands production which adds to global warming.

Proponents argue the oil sands will develop regardless of the pipeline?s fate and hence the project will have little impact on emissions, a view endorsed by the U.S. State Department in a draft environmental impact statement released in March.

Mr. Obama has said he will only approve the pipeline if it does not ?significantly exacerbate? the climate problem. But told The Times that Canada could ?potentially be doing more to mitigate carbon release.?

Ottawa is currently working with Alberta and the industry to fashion emission regulations for the oil and gas sector, though the governments are discussing proposals that fall well short of what environmentalists say is needed. Those regulations, once promised for July 1, are now expected to be released later this year.

The president is not expected to make a decision on the pipeline until late fall ? at the earliest ? despite a series of motions by Republicans in Congress to speed up the process.

'The Wolverine' claws way to top of box office

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Wolverine" slashed monsters and minions to debut atop the weekend box office.

The Fox film featuring Hugh Jackman's sixth turn as the claw-wielding superhero opened with $55 million in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Last weekend's top movie, Warner Bros.' low-budget horror "The Conjuring," slipped to second place, adding another $22.1 million to its take, while "Despicable Me 2" was in third with $16 million. The Universal animated sequel, with its cast of cute, yellow minions, has made more than $600 million worldwide since it came out four weeks ago.

"The Wolverine," which is set in Japan and features an international cast, earned another $86.1 million overseas. The film's opening-week take surpassed the $120 million it cost to make, said Chris Aronson, Fox's head of domestic distribution.

"It's a huge opening for the clawed one," he said. "It played equally well from Maine to Maui."

Another Fox film, the animated snail-racing tale "Turbo," was in fourth place with $13.3 million. Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2" followed with $11.5 million.

Woody Allen's latest, "Blue Jasmine," enjoyed a stellar opening of its own, though on a much smaller scale. Starring Cate Blanchett, the film opened in just six theaters but still collected $612,767.

"It's one of the biggest opening per-theater averages ever for a non-animated film," said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Ticket sales this weekend were up almost 30 percent over the same weekend last summer, he said.

"It was a good weekend to be a moviegoer because the choices just got a lot more interesting," Dergarabedian said, noting a mix that includes animated, independent and big-budget action offerings.

"Fruitvale Station," the Sundance winner already generating Oscar buzz, opened across the country and edged its way into the top 10, contributing to a summer box office that's up more than 10 percent over last year.

___

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.

Michael Chiesa gets first loss by tapping just before the round ended at UFC on Fox 8

Going into his fight with Jorge Masvidal at UFC on Fox 8, "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Michael Chiesa was undefeated. Now, he has a loss on his record that he probably will think about for the rest of his career. Masvidal won with a D'arce choke at 4:59 in the second round.

Fighting in his home state of Washington, Chiesa started the fight well. In the first round, Chiesa knocked Masvidal to the ground, and looked close to finishing the fight first with strikes, and then with a choke. Masvidal recovered, returned to his feet, and managed a few shots of his own.

Later in the second round, Masvidal rolled Chiesa into a D'Arce position just before the clapper that announces 10 seconds left in the round sounded. Masvidal squeezed, and Chiesa tapped right before the horn sounded to end the second round. The fight was stopped, and Masvidal earned the win at 4:59 in the second round.

Chiesa stormed out of the cage as Masvidal celebrated his win. There was bad blood between the two before the fight as Masvidal complained about Chiesa's beard and Chiesa said he wasn't happy with Masvidal's smack talk. Between the bad blood, and Chiesa tapping with barely any time on the clock, he will want that fight back.

Michigan marks 3rd anniversary of oil spill

ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 26 (UPI) -- There's always a chance of failure when dealing with mechanical equipment and oil pipelines, Canadian pipeline company Enbridge said.

Friday marks the 3rd anniversary of the rupture of Line 6B, part of a regional pipeline network operated by pipeline company Enbridge. The rupture released about 20,000 barrels of oil into southern Michigan waters near Kalamazoo and was the costliest onshore incident of its kind in the United States. The pipeline was carrying Canadian tar sands oil, which sinks and mixes with river sediment.

Demonstrators in Michigan protested the company as it worked on pipeline repairs ahead of the anniversary. Enbridge spokesman Jason Manshum told Michigan Public Radio there are no guarantees for oil pipelines.

"I would love to say that we have done the following ten items that will ensure there are no leaks again. I would love to tell you that. But I can't," he said in an interview broadcast Thursday. "We're dealing with mechanical equipment and any time you deal with mechanical equipment there's a chance for some sort of failure."

Henry Henderson, director of Midwest operations for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said Friday's anniversary is a "sobering reminder" of the lingering threat from tar sands.

Enbridge, however, said it set a benchmark of zero incidents from its pipeline networks. The company spent nearly $1 billion on clean up costs associated with the July 26, 2010, spill.

Drone gender gap: More women worldwide opposed to strikes than men?

Drones and gender chart

Pew Research Institute

There's a significant global gender gap when it comes to the United States' use of drones for military strikes, with more women around the world opposing the use of unmanned aerial vehicles than men.

While women in general are "far less likely than men to say that force is sometimes necessary in the pursuit of justice," the "gender difference over drone strikes is unusually large," says the Pew Research Institute in a new report.

In the U.S., of 61 percent of Americans who approve of drone strikes in military situations, 70 percent are men and 53 percent are women, Pew found.

But the gender gap is even greater in other countries "about this signature Obama administration anti-terrorist tool," wrote Bruce Stokes, Pew's director of global economic attitudes, in the report:

In Japan, for example, 41 percent of men approve of drone attacks, compared with just 10 percent of women. Double digit gender gaps are also found in six of the eight EU nations polled, as well as Australia, Canada, the U.S., South Korea and Uganda.

The Obama administration says it uses military drones to target al Qaeda leaders and senior Taliban officials who are plotting attacks against the U.S. and U.S. troops. But a recent NBC News investigation found that in Pakistan, the CIA didn't always know who it was targeting in using the drones.

Last spring, Pew surveyed people in 39 nations about the U.S. use of drone missile strikes in countries like Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. The only three countries where "majorities" support the drone use are Israel, Kenya and the U.S. itself, Pew found.

In France, Germany and Spain, "there are also sharp ideological divisions on this issue, with those on the political right far more supportive than those on the left."

(AP) ? Republican Sen. John McCain says he will block Gen. Martin Dempsey's nomination for a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

McCain told reporters Thursday he was frustrated with Dempsey's response toward the end of his confirmation hearing when he pressed the general about his personal opinion on Syria. He is seeking additional answers.

The Arizona lawmaker said he would put a hold ? essentially block ? the nomination from moving forward in the Senate.
